The interesting thing is that this photo was taken in the Norfolk Southern yard in town!!

    That hood shot shows 4 GP38's ?

Man CSX sure has alot of those units :D

It takes 4 GP38's to pull a train that 2 SD70/75I's could pull [IMG] ;)

and rember dave. 2 CSX AC4400CW or SD70MAC could do what 2 CN SD70I cant do with a coal train on a 2% mountain grade in the rain [IMG]

Back to the non braging side of things. CSX seems to quickly geting rid of there non -2 units, GP38-2, oldest SD40-2, and SD50s. Wounder how long they all got?

Yeah , I understand but those AC4400CW's take forever to get them moving at a good speed , they are made for pulling heavy coal trains .

I don't know , I was just kidding BUT from my experience as a Engineer , General Motors power is the best out there , not because CN power is mostly GM .

Actually CN went out and bought 200 4400CW's and the only reason they bought them is because they can be made quick and cheap , and when your out there cruising down the main-line , it shows :D Or when your setting cars out or lifting cars , it's a pain in the @** . But everyone has their favorites , thats cool [IMG]

And if you look at my profile you'll see me out on the front of a 4400CW , I got to get a shot with a different unit :D

    Cheers!!

The unit at the "bottom" of the picture is a GP38, the next unit is actually a GP38-2 (they were in the 25xx series); the next unit with the blue roof may be a GP40 (I think it has 3 radiator fan, but will have to check the original print to see); the lead unit is a GP16 (easy to spot by its rounded cab roof).

For those that don't know, SCL rebuilt their GP7/9's into GP16's, modeled after the first few Paducah rebuilds they had done. The SCL program was not as extensive as the IC program. More details are available in one of our old threads: http://www.trainboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=61&t=000064

CSX IS RETIRING THEIR GP38-2's!!!?? what will replace them??? those GP40-2's are probably getting prepaired to be gone too, aren't they?? geez before you know it, the 26xx-28xx and the 44xx & 6xxx(variable)-69xx GP40-2's'll be vacant! what a shame, I haven't heard of any new GP's on the market, Maybe the GP38-2's and GP402"S and even the SD40-2's will re appear on CSX as -3s?? this is an interesting subject.

Well, up here in ex-Conrail country there is no shortage of GP38-2s or GP40-2s. Every week I spot a new repaint on the property.

As for the SD50s, the 15 year lease is up, and obviously they decided not to renew it. Maybe it'll be more Alstom fodder.

The Idea CSX is geting for there sell offs is that they will sell them to a leaser (like the LLPX trade) and have them lease them back to CSX, this way CSX dosen't pay maintance, Just fuel and lease time.

It makes me sick about the whole GM/GE power deal, If EMD could produce units faster I GARENTY that the world would have a whole lot more SD70/75I, SD70MAC and SD90s running around. Heck the reason why there are currently no orders in the EMD book is because of UP's 1000 unit order, If a railroad where to want some SD70M or MAC they would have to wait 4 years till UPs order is complete just to get there units. This is also the reason why CP didn't order the SD89MAC (yet) and went for AC4400CW. I am almost sure once this 4 (actually 3 now) year wait is up well see a order by CP for SD89MAC, CSX for SD90MAC-HII (they liked the CP ones they tested here a few month ago... even though they never really went far into the CSX system) or BNSF for more yet SD70MAC. EMD should have NEVER closed LaGrange I think it was the worst (from a business standpoint not railfan) move they made. (other than leting UP rush the SD90MAC-HII into servce) However even with EMD's books filled up it does allow them to futher test and update designs. I think the SD89MAC will be a REALLY solid proformer now that EMD has 3 years to update and modify the design. In fact all EMD has been doing with GM 92 (and SD90MAC-HII GM90 and GM91) is updating them and sending them to pueblo for testing. for the past 2 years it has been back and forth to and from Pueblo and LaGrange (even though locomotive building has ended there resurch and development still takes place there). Finnaly EMD does have a GP on the market, though technically not totally EMD designed (or even powered for that case) they are the GP15D and GP20D, all and all there are bosie MK1500 and MK2000.
