Quick question on use of the foam incline ramps from Woodland Scenics. I've used a few of these in my layout, and am wondering if it's a good idea to fill-in the large cracks that are exposed -- particularly around the outside edge of turns. It seems that it would be easier to start with them being all filled-in, but I'm not sure. I was simply going to tape-off the edges and then pour-on and smooth plaster into all the cracks. Is that a good or terrible idea?
I've only used the ramps once so far. What I did was to filled the gaps with crumpled newspaper and cover it with plaster cloth. If you are going to fill them, may I suggest CelluClay: a paper-based product that's going to be a good deal lighter than the plaster. Mark
Instead of filling them, run some masking tape over them to flatten the surface, then cover with your choice of material. No sense in wasting a bunch of plaster filling the gaps.
Okay, yeah. Some combination of those two suggestions was the other direction I was headed, and that seems more correct to me. Thanks for the input
I've done that too. Be sure to butt the ends of the cloth and not overlap, or you'll end up with a bump you'll have to sand smooth before laying track (voice of experience).
My layout I used the Woodland Scenic foam inclines set and used just the woodland plaster cloth. I laid the piece side by side then covered them with a second layer over lapped the section to get it smooth with out bumps. It covers well build in 2007 and still don't have any problem after all this time so I think this works well! attached photo after using incline set and plaster cloth laying track with cork. then and now!
