My brother is heading towards Winston-Salem on business, which takes him near S. Stratford Road, along a Norfolk Southern line. And he would like to know if that line, which appears to run from Winston-Salem to Mooresville, is used for mainline trains, branchline trains, locals, or is it just sittin' there (like so many lines are nowadays). Anybody familiar with that particular section of the railroad? Thanks in advance. ---jps
Most abandoned Most of that is abandoned. See www.abandonedrailroads.homestead.com/nc_sou_bariumsprins_mooresville.html The line is active from Charlotte north. There are a couple of industries that are served up north of CLT. I watched a pair of SD40-2s with 12 cars work northbound a couple of weeks ago. One SD was a remote control unit on the end of the train. I do not know what they do with the RC unit as they did not use it on the section where I was watching. Plus the speed limit seems to be 10mph so you better have some time when railfaning there. Ryan
Shooter, Your brother needs to go up US 52 and get off at the Airport exit. That route parellels the NS yard at Winston Salem. Harold
Ryan, I get a 404 error when trying to view that page. Sure the link is correct? I'm curious as to whether the segment from Winston-Salem to Mocksville is still active. Edit: Nevermind that, I found the correct URL: www.abandonedrailroads.homestead.com/nc_sou_bariumsprings_mooresville.html Doesn't tell the status of the line up in Davie or Forsyth counties tho.
abandoned The abandoned railway site seems to rely on on the ground reports from readers a lot so if someone has not reported it abandoned then it probably does not have it listed. Ryan
