Yeah, they repurposed other cars such as former T&NO observation lounges. They bought the curved glass "kits" from Pullman I believe.
I wonder how much heavier they were with the add-ons, cause the Milwaukee Road's domes rode on 3 axle trucks, versus's these 2 axle trucks.

That top picture- what am I seeing on that diner? Some sort of photo anomaly? Or is it covered in bird droppings? Or?
Yeah, that. Also, what is one of the SP's signature cars doing in the Burlington yard? Didn't the SP/UP/MILW compete with the WP/DRGW/CB&Q?
Not sure about any SP involvement, but most certainly MILW collaborated with the UP's "Cities" trains.
Yes, the SP definitely handled the City of San Francisco and Overland over the old Central Pacific. And the Exposition Flyer and California Zephyr were Burlington on one end and WP on the other.
Here's a good site for finding out what became of these cars: http://trainweb.org/web_lurker/SPf/ Apparently these pics are from Amtrak's early days. I know "The Rainbow Era" refers to the BN, but Amtrak could be said to have had a Rainbow Era of its own right after it was formed, when it was mixing cars, but still gearing up to repaint and/or reluctant to repaint leased equipment.
These are all from the earliest days of Amtrak. From a few other photos, I have some of these are likely from Day 1, May 1, 1971.
More information. The MILW portion was trains between Chicago and Omaha. So, whatever SP or UP might have been routed eastward, via Omaha...?
Yeah, and I have even modeled some of those Budd 10-6 sleepers built for the Sunset Limited. Wish I could have ridden on one of them. Did get to ride on a few UP Budd 10-6s while they were in service on the Amtrak Crescent.
