Jason: All the drivers should be geared and one set of traction tires per four drivers would be ideal. Stay cool and run steam......
I have two Key Cab forwards. The 1985 vintage one will pull a 35 car reefer block on an NTRAK loop with no problem (no traction tires, either). The other (1991 vintage) slips at 25 cars. Any decent cab forward should have all wheels geared and sufficient weight on the drivers to pull at least 30 cars on level track. You do that, and I'm in (again)! I would view a tender mounted power as a 70's throwback and sacrelige. Doug
Ummm, they never had tender mounted power in the 70s. The European steamers did, and they pull much more better. It's not the number of driven tires, it's how many of these tires actually touch the rail. It's a lot harder than it looks!
I wouldn't mind if it was a tender driven loco,as long as all drivers are geared, this would also mean more weight can be applied over the drivers,no motor to take up room! Reply from Intermountain...... Jason I forwarded your e-mail to our product development department for their consideration. Thank you for your interest in InterMountain Railway Company. Jason: That's a start in the right direction. Jerry is very accomodative in my dealings with him, in regards to the limited number of requests I made to him. Steam would certainly enhance the Intermountain lineup of loco's in N scale, especially big steam.. Stay cool and run steam.....
Just a 'form letter' reply thanking me for my interest in IM products, and that my message will be forwarded to the appropiate dept. But I won't give up!!!
Well, I can't use one. They never came through Sugar Land. They pulled them of any train coming east when they got to El Paso. But wait a minute........I have a photo of one in Sugar Land.
The Short Track Club in Vista, CA is planning a permanent layout in our new 50'x72' building modelling Donner Pass in N scale. We will have a flexible era from the mid 50s to the mid 70s. One lap of the mainline is going to be 11-15 scale miles. We are going to need cab forwards. Count me in even though my first love is Santa Fe in the Southwest.
We have had ones like the Z Scale model. Key has had several runs in brass. Production AC12s would be a good thing. PCM decided not to do articulateds until the factory has a couple of non-articulateds under its belt as steamers are complicated enough without trying to do an articulated as the first steam engine. Apparently not all manufactuers agree (LifeLike with the Y3, Intermountain HO AC12, and Athearn Challenger in N, and Atlas with the 2-8-8-2)!!! Charlie Vlk Railroad Model Resources/. PCM
Charlie, Sorry to here that PCM will not be doing articulateds until later....Hopefully they will do them eventually. Until then, I guess i will keep on looking for old Rivis.... Dave
...all the engines I am interested in are cab forward ! how do you spell modern diesel ? all together now: m o d e r n d i e s e l !!
At the last train show our club was set up at, we were running a bunch of modern diesels only at one point. Still had one little guy come by and make some great sound FX as he chassed some GE Dash 9s around the layout. "Chug a chug a woo woo."
Update from Intermountain. Seems we're not alone with this idea............. Jason I have forwarded a number of e-mails regarding N scale Cab Forward Locomotives to our product development department and so far I have not had any response or been advised what if anything we might be planning. Additional information was just added to the web site regarding the HO version so hopefully as it progresses we will find out if there are any plans for an N scale version. I will try to follow up on your request, but feel free to contact me again. Jerry Harkness Customer Service Representative InterMountain Railway Company P.O. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the great model railroad sloth has been spotted at Intermountain. A nocturnal beast, it's best known for extreme inaction and a unique ability to forget previous events. The animal is thought to be endangered, but it moves so slowly that no one is actually sure how many are alive and how many have expired.
Who wants one? I didn't know I did until I saw it, and held it in my hands....... Here is my brand new AC-12 CabForward. It's Z scale. Anyone else want one? www.ztrack.com
Why NOT!!! On some small pikes with 9-3/4" curves... that might be the only cab-forward they could run. BUT... I'd only be interested in the 4-8-8-2 cab-forwards. The BRG&P would certainly have at least one... even if only for excursion duties while the [Athearn] Big-Boy is in for servicing. [ March 24, 2006, 11:41 AM: Message edited by: Calzephyr ]
Hey Jason, maybe you want to turn this into a poll to actually count the number of votes to help bolster your cause. We've actually had great success with the automobile manufacturers petitioning them with online polls. I don't know what percentage of n-scale buyers could be extrapolated from a poll on this site, but I'd have to think even doing a limited run of these would be successful and likely sell out. Heck, I'd probably buy one (so long as its done well) even though I don't model that region. -jamie
Grandpa "Joe", www.zscalemonster.com to buy one www.ztrack.com to contact the official AZL distributor The bank robbing part is entirely up to you, but I recommend against it. You wouldn't want to buy this little beauty with tainted money anyway, for fear of someone taking it away!
