I purchased a Lionel Christmas theme handcar (Santa and Snowman). It is used, but the outside appearence is excellent. However, it will only run about 5 inches before stalling out. If I hold it firmly on the track it runs like a demon. The thing is so lightweight it looks like it would always have contact problems. What is someone else's experience?

For me, these things really struggle unless the track is extremely clean. Make sure you clean the wheels and pickup shoe of the car too.

    A few thoughts
    1) Welcome JJM
    2) I have only run MTH handcars thus far, but have a new Loinel Christmas one that won't come out till after Halloween.

I'd do what I do with all my stuff that doesn't run well. Take it apart as best I can, clean it and reassemble. maybe some conductive lube on whatever transfers the power from the wheels and pickup shoe. Maybe its a bad connection.
Also, is there any place to hide some weight in the undercarriage?

Light weight is always a potential source of troubles. If the track and wheels are clean, also be certain the motor and gearing are both clean, brushes/armature good and unit is sparingly lubricated with the proper oils.

Otherwise, your only option might be trying to add some weight.
