Student Fayre should never have been taken out of MR, Dane. I am DEFINITELY NOT a student, bit did read the column, and thought it was well done for you youngsters! I believe they have moved it to the MR website. Surely everything that helps and encourages young model railroaders must be good for the future of the hobby, but MR seems to think otherwise. ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com
Yes Alan, They did move it to the MR Website. However, ModelRailroader has not given either of the "Hosts/Moderaters" good computer access. I E Mail one of them, and he said that I made a good point about the subject we were speaking of, but he could not do anything as MR wouldn't give them a Puter to work on. Arrg! I subscribe to the Canadian Railway Modeller. For those who wish to find out more about this magazine go to their website at http://www.cdnrwymod.com I do buy the odd other magazines if there is something of particular interest. Robin
I liked CTC Board and Pacific rail news PTJ. Used to subscribe to them and Trains. But now I boycott Trains because of the poor journalism they use. When they did their article a year or so ago. They stated that the BN bought the Frisco. When I wrote and stated that they were wrong they stated that sure it was a merger but everbody knows the BN bought them out so thats the way they wrote the article. I think if they want to be known as a good reliable publication you have to use facts not whatever the author decides sounds good. So now then, all thats seems left for me to read is CTC Board.
Alan, another thing I like about N Scale mag, is after you read it a few times, the quality of the paper, I think, helps keep the staples from pulling thru and ripping the cover page. BILL ------------------ ship SOO!
Robin and Dane, I didn't know there was a mag just for you Canadians. Is it as good as it looks? There are lots of general mags but it is nice to have ones specific to your area of interest. Which is why I have just taken out a subscription to N Scale mag. Am awaiting my first copy. Bill, one good thing about Hundman publications, they DO use real good quality paper ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com
Yup, Canada is blessed with good publications. CRM is good, needs alittle improvement, but they do a great job albeit. It is starting to run alittle behind schedule too. They also have some legal battles going on as to using photos w/o consent from the photographer. Branchline is for the prototype. It is my favourite mag. other than BC Rail SIG's Carriboo! Branchline is done by Bystow, who publishes the Track Side Guide. It feutures news on rosters, finacial, and other super specific stuff. For 3.75, I can't complain!!!!! It is awsome! Then there is the CN, BCR, and CP Sig, they all do a good and unique job. Dane N. ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@hotmail.com
Everyone's covered all the bases, but what the H... I'll throw my 2 cents in. MRR and MRC but most of all the Kalmbach books on construction techniques and planning and other layouts. That's where I get most of my ideas from. I'll agree with E-8 too, this and other boards are a wonderfull exchange of information. ------------------ When in doubt, empty your magazine.

quote:
Originally posted by E-8: Diesel Era and CTC Board when I get a chance. I loved Vintage Rails before it was discontinued. I hear it is coming back? I don't live near a train store anymore so I can't go leaf through them and buy the ones I want

Well, Vintage Rails has returned, sort of. Kalmbach bought the carcasses of the de- funct RailNews and Vintage Rails, but so far I don't see any of the RN columns (like Doug Riddell's From the Cab, an engineer's perspective of life on the rails). The incarnation is Classic Trains, and it ain't too bad. Pacific RailNews R.I.P. ------------------ Ship IT on the Frisco! Bob T.
Strange... nobody mentioned Extra 2200 South at all. It's a great documentation of loco- motive purchases, leases sales, rebuildings, and (alas) scrappings. The Dovers did a won- derful job, and the new publishers have picked up the torch. For locomotive information, I heartily re- commend Diesel Era and X2200S.(at least for the North American diesel nuts, anyway). ------------------ Ship IT on the Frisco! Bob T.
I have tried to Read Extra 2200 South, but it just doesn't work for me! I try and try and try, but there is something about the presentation that makes it akward for me to read. I have found that is some issues of CTC Board and the Hotbox as well. But they do a good job, and you will often catch me at the Hobby Store with a Extra 2200 in my hand Just my opion on the matter, Dane Nicholson ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@hotmail.com
Diesel Era-I am one of those "Professional Diesel Spoters" Trains- First I ever got CTC Board- sometimes (trains alternitive) MR- sometimes RMC- sometimes X2200- haven't tried yet hobby shop doesn't carry ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! I subscribe to Trains and Model Railroader, will pick up Railfan, Craftsman and the others if there is an article of particular interest to me. I like Diesel Era, CTC Board and X2200 South when I can find it. I also enjoy the quarterly publications of the Friends of the Burlington Northern Railroad and Soo Line Historical and Technical Society (I belong to both). I also have access to Railway Age and Progressive Railroading. I very much enjoyed the first issue of Classic Trains from Kalmbach. I'll read anything on prototype railroading that I can get my hands on. [This message has been edited by DakotaFan (edited 30 April 2000).]
Thought I'd throw in another good model railroad reference. It's not a magazine but Railroad Model Craftsman magazine has been using similiar articles the past few months. It's 'Bridge and Trestle Handbook', put out by Carstens. I found it great for bridge and fly-over designs. When I need to span a 7' upper level walk under area, I went to the book and found the perfect bridge. The 'Quebec Bridge,St. Lawrence River'. Took me three months to scratch build. I have it double tracked and with working warning lights. ...Eddie ------------------ Eddie Delozier PRR N-scale deloziers.com eddelozier@yahoo.com

I'm not a cheerleader for Kalmbach but I just bought my first issue of Classic Trains and enjoyed it very much. I recently let my subscription to the monthly Trains lapse but I hit the TRAINS Newswire site each week. (The site is usually updated each Wednesday.) I thumb through MRR, RMC, Diesel Era, and N Scale at newsstands but only bring 'em home if there's an article that looks interesting. I guess that makes me a browser, not a subscriber; I get the N-Trak newsletter, while considering reviving my lapsed NMRA membership. (I don't quite comprehend apparent friction between NMRA and N-Trak.) Magazines and books, like minds, work better when they're open. ------------------ You can always tell a model railroader; you just can't tell him much. E-Lack & N-Trak, welcome to TrainBoard You are lucky to be able to browse through magazines before buying. I would probably do the same if I could, but here in the UK I have to take out a subscription if I want a mag. regularly. ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com
I regulalry read TRAINS, and O-Gauge Railroading. Recently I subscribed to Classic Trains from Kalmbach Publishing, which I have really enjoyed thus far.
