I would like to see Atlas and Kato re-release some of the Geeps like the GP40 GP35 GP50 GP9 etc. Excect this time I want them all DCC ready with white-blue LEDs installed. I heard a rumor that Atlas was going to re-release the GP40 DCC Ready. Anyone else have any news on any Geeps from Atlas or Kato?

P.S. The LL GP20 from what people say runs well, but it is not DCC ready. I much prefer to just drop in a DCC chip and reprogram it and boom, I'm done. I have no real love of hacking on my frame or trying to solder hair like wire to all over the place. I can and have done it (and will probably will again) but I like the plug n play stuff better.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I want them in either BN, BNSF, ATSF, or UP. All others are optional [IMG]

    Matt,
Atlas did informally (on their forum) state that they were going to produce DCC ready GP40 "classics" in the future, but with no date... you could make your own by sustituting GP40-2 underframes for the GP40 in the meantime. As far as GP50's.... Kato has announced nothing, but their GP50 chassis is of such an old design, that I think you'd be better to adapt an Atlas GP40-2 underfram to the GP50 shell, (if you must have a GP50) )Kato has made no announcements to producing updated/ "Classic" GP50's). As far as a "Classic" DCC ready GP7/9, I can't think that it would be too far behind... the "Classic" SD7/9 is supposed to be DCC ready (although it is merely an SD35 chassis..)

I can't say about DCC, since it's kind of irrelevent to me, but JnJ makes some very nice shells and frames. I've got two GP 15-1's, and the frames I got for them are Atlas, repowered with Kato motors. They run great bare naked, but I've no doubt that won't change once the shells are on.

    Chessie,
The Atlas GP40-2 underframe will work with the Atlas GP40 shell? Are any modifacations needed?

    Thanks

I doubt we will ever see Kato re-release its old GP50 and GP38, Kato would have to make new frames for them, plus they have the walkways and sill unit molded togeter. On there first relesaes theses were molded in the closest appropriate colors, black or gray depending on the road name. These units are way out dated and I think we will see Kato make all new engines before they ever re-realese theses guys.

Matt, I can't see any problem substituting the DCC-ready 40-2 frames for the straight 40's. They used the same running gear. Unfortunately, the Atlas Catalogue is down, so I can't check the part numbers.

Yes, I have mounted a GP40 shell on a GP40-2 underframe in the past, but don't recall that there was any modification necessary. As far as the part #'s, I know that they have different part #'s for the frames and motors from each other, most likely due to the isolation for DCC

Thanks, Harold, I forgot about your new pages.
Matt, the sideframes aren't an issue here. It's the frame (chassis) halves only that need to be changed. Everything else should pop back in.

Just checked Harold's site. The motor saddle is the same, as are the bearings/worm. On the Dash-2 diagram, it has both trucks drawn though the 480305 Blomberg B truck, as used on the 40, is named a Dash-2 truck incorrectly.
By that alone, I would say a straight swap is a goer.

    Gary.
