Yes, the N700 series is one of the latest bullet trains in Japan. I shall be riding it again soon. Hallelujah! Hint, hint.
I like that! Gas may be $3.15 per gallon (I'm in TX), but only 83 cents per liter! I'm gonna start buying my gas in liters!
A fellow club member is downsizing and I was able to acquire a Kato CB&Q F3a, an Intermountain FTa/b set and another of my club’s anniversary cars (not pictured) and the Kato CN Transcontinental train pictured below.
Well I didn't end up buying anything in July. I am determined to build more benchwork but it's hot in the layout/garage space and our contractor needed some space in the garage. Maybe August will bring a massive plywood purchase and the mainline can get completed. HUH!
I finally got some time to marry the two together. I just hope the Combined T-Trak layout in Altoona is big enough for this. Can't believe only ONE motor car (#10 out of 16) drives the entire train. The cars are fairly light and extremely no drag. All metal wheels. And I love the $12 decoder that took 5 minutes to install! Those crazy Kato design engineers! I know some of you will ask, so here it is. The real train is 16 cars long and we rode in car #14. I *think* all Shinkansens are 16 cars long but I could be wrong.
Most of the ones that head south from Tokyo to different places are 16. The Haybusa (if it still runs) going north is shorter. It couples to another short Shinkansen until it reaches Morioka I think and then they split and go in to different directions. I never got the chance to see that while i lived there though. I reserved the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner 8 car set with lighting in all cars and DCC Sound on the locomotive. I have 6 Intermountain cars that will also run with this set. Not to elongate the consist, but to have few interchange cars.
I reserved one each of the Rapido Metra F40PHM-3 locos (total 8) and 6 of their Budd 3-car sets in the Metra/BNSF swoosh scheme. Now if Athearn will finally put out that F59 Metra #90 in CNW heritage colors they’ve been threatening to produce for a few years and somebody makes (or I finally kitbash) an SD70MACH or two I’d have all the Metra heritage locos and be a very happy camper. Depending on the route, the high speed trains are either 8 or 16 cars. I worked in Gunma, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Gifu, Nagaoka, Niigata and Takasaki City. The train speeds vary also, depending on the route and train company. Check this out!! https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/...2b59f565f7154c39cc2b6a773333dc03&action=click
Did you pick up any Kato/Tomix trains while working in Japan? If I worked in Japan, all the money I make will go right out for trains and food. The food is amazing there!
I went to my local Michael’s yesterday to buy some strip wood. They no longer have the display with various individual pieces. I’m looking for wood for pipe loads for my gondolas. While there I bought this yellow thread to use as strapping. I had a $5 voucher and the thread was 62 cents. I bought a small bottle of very light gray craft paint for 69 cents and found these small tufts for 6 or 7 dollars. With the voucher and a 20% off coupon my total including tax was just under $2. We went to Home Depot later and I picked up these sanding sponges that I will use on the layout. I am going to use flat toothpicks for the pipe loads. I checked online and found my local Walmart has them in aisle I21 and the Walmart Market Place store (think supermarket) has them in aisle A14. Next time we are in one of these stores I’ll get them so I can start on the loads. Not exciting stuff but useful.
I really like those bullet trains, I have a couple of them including the Dr. Yellow. They look great and run great, even with only one motor car as you mention. Not much is faster than a speeding bullet train, that's super, man.
Hi MK No, while I was running R&D groups around central Japan, I did not have an RR set up. I had HO since the early 1960s, and then with my kids in the 1980s and 90s. Then, moved to AZ in mid-1990s, and put it in boxes because in AZ it is too hot in the garages, and no basements. Arizona has not yet learned about the advantages of putting the heat exchangers in the basement instead of the attics or on the roof... go figure. Restarted in N scale in an office about 4 years ago. And yes, the Giant Shrimp in Aizu-Wakamatsu are truly amazing- 2 is a meal!
