With the new section of my layout depicting Chicago area steel mills on the IHB, I picked up two MP15DC switchers. One was Seaboard System, because IHB leased and renumbered one of those (along with two SP, which I obtained a long time ago) and then I saw one in US Steel scheme on EBay, which should fit right in on the switch job within the steel mill. I am also collecting those Ken Ray cars for steel mill switching, and got a few of those the other day.

Picked up two GP60s in NS by Fox Valley through the internet from a hoppy shop in Rockford, IL. Also received a few WS items to add some detail to the diorama in my office and the future layout when I move back to the US. The latter items were purchased in March but got shipped through various military installations in Europe before making their way out here to Japan![IMG]

Hello all. Here's a couple of recent purchases I made, truck mirrors and telephone booths. I've included detail photos of front/back of phone booth:

Some new and some "new to me" hoppers. The Cancarbs, which are both MT, are about 12 years apart in production one being 2004 and the other 2016. Reminded me of some things that changed with MT over the years as the older car has the operational hatches and the low flange axles were an included option.

All cars in the picture will go into the shop to be reshod with metal wheels before being released into the fleet.

Not long ago, i bought an N-scale tank car that I saw on Facebook just because it had "Latex from Liberia" on a Firestone tank car and, whenever we visit our mission in Liberia (me twice, my wife three times, so far) we drive through the Firestone rubber plantation while traveling to and from the airport.

It was a little silly since my Dad's layout, which is at my parents' house, is N-scale. It's basically mine, but I'm still packing Dad's stuff and don't yet own a house to put the layout in.

Anyway, last week I saw another one, this time in HO scale, on eBay and bought it. Same reason. It's still a little silly, but this weekend, it will get some weight added, metal wheels, and go out to the Sebring Model Railroad Club where I can run it.

The N-scale version will, for now, probably go on my bookshelf at work.[IMG]

A set of earth-tone pastels. I've avoided pastels for years after my last attempts at weathering with them ended up dusting my rolling stock for fingerprints. Maybe this time around I'm finally careful enough not to leave so much evidence behind :ROFLMAO:

Some scene supplies just arrived. The nearest hobby store to me is over 100 miles and selection is not that great so most everything I get is over the internet. Sometimes though the online images are misleading and mostly due to my pre-conceived notions and lack of info from the sellers to confirm or dispel those assumptions. In this case the crates are way bigger than I had thought they were going to be. I was thinking something more the size of a 8'x3'x3' but instead these are 20'x6'x4' (n scale feet). Not a problem though as they will make fantastic loads for some of my flat cars. When a door shuts God opens a window lol. Anyways they are done really nice being CNC'd from actual wood block.. Tichy barrels/drums are best I've seen and I know the skids are top notch as I've used them before.

Thx for the feedback on those 55 gal. drums and pallets. If you don't mind my asking, what do you use for cutting parts away from the sprue? I have some etched stainless steel kits that recommend using manicurist scissors. Something for plastic, mainly, though. Some parts are so small and thin, it'll take a delicate approach to avoid deforming or breaking.

I've yet to hack away at the drums but I will likely use the xuron rail nippers to remove the drums and maybe the same for the lids provided the tool doesn't drift into the material I want to keep as I make the cut. If it does then I'll use a hobby knife with multiple passes erring on leaving more rather than less sprue material on the lids then carefully sanding off the excess so they fit into the drum openings as designed.

I always use a hobby knife with a fresh blade for laser cut wood parts removal like those skids/pallets. Multiple lighter passes rather than heavy minimal cuts per my experience give the best results. Same technique for etched metal pieces. Heavy passes tend to distort/bend the part you want to keep more than you'd think so a more conservative approach is best IMO. Obviously the PE wears hobby knife blades much quicker than nippers but the nippers wind up distorting the part you want to keep and usually leave more unwanted sprue on the remaining part unlike a knife where the latter allows for more precision and a pristine end result provided you don't get too heavy handed on the passes.

If you don't already have them I'd advise picking up some hemostats with non ribbed jaws to hold these smaller parts when sanding off the excess. Grip the parts just enough to hold them stationary but not so much as to compress and ruin details. Tweezers are awful for this process as they require constant and consistent pressure which human hands are terrible at compared to the multiple pressure locking positions of hemostats.

Found this gem at local train store. It is the version with movable trap doors. Someone converted it back to Rapido trucks.

All noted, great info. Thx for the heads-up on the hemostats, I was gonna pick up a cheap set at harbor freight, which I'll still do, to use for other things, but I didn't think about stuff liked the ribbed jaws and more precise pressure. I often overlook, or am not thinking about the tiny scale when I have ideas on how-tos.. I need to get to a point where I can actually get my hands dirty to appreciate the intricacies of this hobby and scale. Right now, I'm just hoarding stuff while my workdesk and home is cluttered. Also thanks on the hobby knife tip, it makes sense to use and I understand clearly what you're saying, using light and delicate passes. (y)
