That is an SD50F built by GM, not GE. CN does have some wide bodied dash 8's that look similar from a distance. -Trevor
Acutally this is the picture I had meant to post, buth thats ok because I had no idea the 1st one was a SD-50
According to "Canadian Trackside Guide 1995", 5530 is an SD60F built by GMD. The SD50F's are numbered in the 5400 series.
The SD50Fs have there number boards mounted high above the windshields near the rooflline while on the SD60Fs the numberboards are mounted on the nose.
I'm surprised at how similar the GE and EMD cowls look. If one didn't know the number series, it might be hard to tell them apart. Both are really cool looking. Wish more of them made it down south.
Same here. I started thinking about this, a few years ago. Their different appearances were part of railfanning fun. How did that song go? "Little boxes, all the same..." Boxcab E50
Not so surprising really, the CN SD50Fs, SD60Fs and the C40-8Ms as well as the 1st batch of dash9s all have Canadian Safety Cabs based on one set of specs. The Draper taper was a CN specified design feature as well.
for cn power, 5400's are sd50's, 5500's are sd60's 5200&5300's are sd40's, 5600-5626 are sd70 & 5627-5800 are sd75 2400's D8's, 2500-2727 D9's [+2200-2205] 2220-2254 evo's 8000's sd70m-2's 94xx-95xx? gp40 47xx-48xx,75xx gp38 wow, i am remembering more than i thought i could.. still haven't a clue what our yard junk is [4100,7000,7200]
Don't they look great in stripes! Lenny - great lashup with the ONR unit in the mix! Where was that taken?
Shot was taken at Dorval, a Montreal suburb, just west of the Via station which is one of my favourite railfan haunts.
Hi Martyn; Actually, it is the ONR units that are way off the beaten track, probably paying back hours owed from pool service. CSX and CN also pool trains from Massena NY to Montreal interchanging at Beauhaurnois Quebec. The CSX trackage being originally NYC. Cheers, Lenny
