I saw this at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga. I can't remember where it was from but definately not North America. Italian maybe? Looks like something Fiat might build.
Yeah its an Italian paint scheme for sure. And it's a motor car. I think I've seen them for sale as models on italian ebay. I want to say it was called a breda, but i'm not sure.
Did a quick search. These are actually one of my favorite passenger units in Italy. But i'm more partial to the electric version. I keep looking at them on sale on ebay and a set of cars will easily sell for 300 dollars. They a re a very popular item. I can't afford one. Two types: Diesel is a ALN electric is a ALE Lots and lots of series numbers, lots of pretty colors too. Some links: http://www.photorail.com/phr1-leFS/aln56breda.htm http://www.duegieditrice.it/tuttotreno/ttstoria.asp the defintive link: http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/it/diesel/dmu/pix.html If you look at european trains they will have a plaque that says the model number and the series number on it. Or they will simply paint that one the front of the engine. I'm sure your unit has a number in the picture if you have any more pictures. Here's an example of what I mean. It's a ALN model 772, number 3400. http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/it/diesel/dmu/ALn772/7723400.jpg [ August 14, 2005, 02:10 PM: Message edited by: traingeekboy ]
ALN 56 this looks like yours. You are correct, it was built by Fiat in 1934. I believe mussolini had a pair as his personal private train. http://www.photorail.com/phr1-leFS/aln56fiat.htm A model link: http://digilander.libero.it/luclopes/aln/aln56.htm A sort of family tree: http://www.claudiovianini.com/pages/LIBRARIES/LITTO.html Thanks for asking BTW. I had fun looking all this stuff up.
You're welcome. I guess I must have known that once but did not trust my vague memory. Sometimes I think I remember something and I am way off.
How, or why, did these two European units make it to North America? Simply for historic display? Boxcab E50
