    Southern Pacific's Santa Margarita Sub of the "Coast Division" in April, 1953. The primary "focus" between San Luis Obispo and Santa Margarita, CA. The main operational challenge is the 2.2% "Cuesta" just West of SLO. I also cover as for West (North) as King City and East (South) as Guadalupe.

    My primary is New York Central plus my 2 freelance lines, the Alma & Jupiter Bay and the Mount Union & Freeport from 1950-1965.

    Secondary is CSX from 1995 to the present. I like to run modern stuff now and again for a change of pace.

    Scenery will be generic northeast, New York to Chicago region. It will be based on the earlier era but will be passable for the modern trains.

    This is a very interesting poll and thread.

    New York Central. Very early 60's, so I can have lightning stripes and some cigar bands. Set in Cincinnati area. Generic buildings, but hope to include a Skyline Chili somewhere. Most all of my freight cars (90%) are Cincinnati area railroads. Heavy on NYC/B&O/C&O. Also included is L&N, SR and N&W.

    Well, it hit 200 and the numbers surprised me. I fully expected the Western Diesel option to be double any of the other options due to the fact that many model what is easy and available. The results to me show that there is no one region or era that dominates the market. Western diesel is a few points above the curve but that is to be expected with all the excellent running UP and Santa Fe/BNSF product on the market.

    Sante Fe, steam era, early 1940's with a logging shortline that connects to the Sante Fe main line, as in the AZ Apache RR between Holbrook, AZ and Maverick, AZ in the forests of Eastern AZ.

    UP, GN, BN, in as much as they ran/run thru Sandpoint Idaho with limited logging from WWWII to transition to the 70's ... I first rode steam out of St Johns Newfoundland in 1957 when my parents returned to the US from Pepperil AFB. Boy that was some 2 day ride across the topsils , watching the steam and smoke roll off the train. And around the curves one cold see/feel the engine hammering away to the ocean then on the ferry to the US. My own RR is Pacific Wide West and Rocky Bar , which is mining , agriculture ( timber/lumber ) and at harvest time in southern Idaho - sugar beets for U and I sugar and wheat out of the Pocatello area which was major shop for UP if i remember correctly from my college days in the 60's. UP pretty much built the west so it is an honor to model it.

    I was really surprised too. Now when it comes to steam/transition I can see it being closer, but particularly into the modern era I was surprised.

    I would not be surprised to find the inclination to modern Eastern roads to be influenced by Norfolk Southern whose sleek black with Pony Logo and advertising has heightened an awareness / interest.

    I agree. Whoever is first out with quality models, well painted, has a bunch of money coming their way. A lot of NS family units will be showing up where they'd otherwise have never been seen.

    I've been thinking a bit more about this. We can also thank Atlas for their plethora of GP30somethings in a huge variety of roads. Two come to mind:
    * Providence and Worcester
    * Bangor and Aroostook
    But I know there are more.
    Then there is Fox Valley which has produced a wide variety of Eastern and South Eastern boxcars
    Any other names come to mind?

    I voted "Eastern Modern," but "Midwest Modern" would be more accurate--my primary focus is central Illinois/Indiana.

    My next module will be set in Maryland, though, so "Eastern" isn't entirely wrong.

    I model the Central Nevada Railroads. In particular, the Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad in the boom era from 1908 - 1916.

    I model the Western Pacific sometime around the end of the '60s to the early '80s. I would love to actually model from the month of the end of California Zephyr service to just after the beginning of the Burlington Northern, but I love all of the WP paint schemes so I gave in.

    I'm still in the planning/collection phase, but I'm aiming at a dual-era Pennsy-like layout based on the PRR Harrisburg/Buffalo line from around Renovo to Machias or Arcade Junction. The primary era would be steam transition - 1956-57. Track layout would be based on this time period. The alternative time is modern era based on the Western New York & Pennsylvania which has bought/leased parts of the Buffalo line from NS and part of the Erie's Southern Tier line East-West across the bottom of NY and parts of NW PA.

    Unfortunately, track layouts have changed dramatically between time period so I have to choose one or the other and make modifications to approximate the other time period.
