The obvious C&NW heritage of this SD40-2 brings a smile.

Someone had a little fun with the "gong" bell. Is there a ditch light burned out? Or did you catch it in the midst of alternating?

I believe it was alternating, but honestly, it's been 9 years since I took this (and wow, it didn't feel like it's been 9 years. )

It's not the first time I see a smiley face drawn on a gong bell like that...

This looks like an interesting arrangement. Maybe I can spot it on Google Earth.

Now that spring is sprunging, it's time to go back a few months. Here's a shot of Pere Marquette 1225 getting prepped in mid-November 2014. This trip was the practice run of the North Pole Express trips that run 4 or 5 times per weekend during the Christmas season. The ashes are being dumped - note the guys with shovels. There are steel sheets between the rails. After the locomotive pulls out of the way the ashes are put in that dump hopper and taken by fork lift to the ash pile. The new wheelsets in the foreground are replacements for one of the passenger cars.

Here I am demonstrating the recommended "proper way" to ride one of the carriages on the Puffing Billy Railway in Belgrave, Victoria near Melbourne.

I was wondering how they kept from setting ties on fire.

Did you grab any video? It would be interesting to hear one of these steamers at work.

Sorry, no. I was so stoked on the smell of real coal smoke that I did not think of taking any video. :)

That's a beautiful machine. There's something about a steam engine working in cold weather - fire and ice...:)

Yes. It actually seems to be breathing. Alive. An impression no common today rumble box can give the viewer.

Caught this helper set coming back into Livingston, MT. Two ACE's with the 40 in between. Sure makes the 40 look small!
