I once took a picture of engine 40 while it was stopped at Deep River. I had climbed up the rocks there and from that view point I could see the engine and a lot of the passenger train. The conductor was standing outside in his period uniform. I took the picture. I changed it from color to gray scale and added a bit of toning. I had it printed on 8X10 mat finish paper and it looked like an old photo. Everyone I showed it to quested it was taken anywhere from 1920 to 1928. I even had a 1910 from some guy. It was fun to do but unfortunately the picture got lost.
When was this taken? I don't really know myself. I believe it is a San Antonio & Aransas Pass 2-6-0 Mogul that was built in 1890 and scrapped in 1928. Shown here in Fulshear, Texas.
Russell, I'm going to take a wild guess and say around 1905, balancing between the truss rod boxcar and what I think is a carbon arc headlight. Just my $.02 worth.
I'd say the photo dates from when the engine was still relatively new, as the crew there seems pretty proud to pose with it. Latest 1900. That's my penny's tax added to Tom's 2 cents.
Did no one here in the northwest chase the 4449 trip this weekend? I couldn't, and was hoping to see some pics here.
I was there last summer. We had #40, a 1920 Alco 2-8-2, pulling our train. When we were running tender-first back to the station we sat in the very front of the coach with the door open and #40's smokebox dominating our view.
