As I watch snow falling outside, I'll start this off with a nice sunny summer photo. From about ten years ago on the Mission Mountain RR, their one man crew train at Stryker, Montana:
I uploaded a low rez copy of this Kodachrome several years ago, but the photo no longer appears and I now have a better scanner, so I thought I'd repost it, plus a going away shot. April 10, 1988 Hinton, WV on the C&O main, an eastbound led by U30C 7218 crosses over at CW Cabin. CW was recently demolished.
Looks like it might have been a bit lonely. Yet could have been quite the site, with nature all around, and trains. I have orders copied here, in my collection.
A few more pics of Roslindale Station. MBTA MP39 approaching Roslindale Station crossing the pedestrian tunnel. Clear blue skys. Later that day it was cloudy.
Following up on my above photo at CW Cabin in Hinton, WV, I happened upon this shocking photo of a boiler explosion at the same spot as I stood 35 years later. The locomotive was the 1642, a C&O H-8 Alleghany 2-6-6-6. Three men were killed in the blast.
Cause was low water uncovering the crown sheet. The ICC Accident Report is the second post of this other forum's topic.
Wow, thanks for the link. Very informative! It doesn't explain why the water level dropped so low, but with the head end crew all killed, it was probably impossible to determine. Past inspection and repair reports showed repetitive trouble with the water pump. A terrifying day for the op in CW for certain.
