How do I upload a personal video (.MOV) into my Railimages account? The video upload process appears to allow entering of URLs only, not files from a personal computer as it allows for photos.

You need to post it on a video hosting site (such as YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, etc.) and then post a link.

For any others reading and curious, uploadable formats to RailImages are: png, jpg, jpeg, jpe, gif. In other words, no videos.

Ken, Rick's answer indicates that videos from selected URL sites are permitted, including Facebook. The video upload button is next to the right of the image upload button on the Railimages upload page. I have posted videos from YouTube with no problem, though never from Facebook. Yet Railimages instructions indicate Facebook is allowed. I'm just curious why my specific URL is being rejected.

Hank- My list is for uploads of images to RI. I believe the videos are links to TrainBoard and RI, not actual uploads to our storage.

Agree that. I posted the video to my Facebook account. Then tried to post the video's Facebook URL to Railimages and directly to the thread. But both were rejected. Railimages indicated that it was not a valid URL, and the direct embed into the thread indicated the specific URL could not be posted.

I see nothing in this URL that appears to be abnormal, https://www.facebook.com/100013141097839/videos/pcb.441292609652105/441292326318800/?type=3&theater.

Hank, when I click on the link, I get a FB error (and I am logged in). Not sure what the proper way is to get a "share-able" link to a video from there is.

    Just found the process:
    • Right click on the video that you get in Facebook.
    • Select “Show video URL” option from the context menu.
    • A pop-up window will be displayed with the actual video url.
    • Copy the URL from there.
    • Now, share the URL with your friend who does not have any Facebook account.

Rick, that was one of the methods I used to obtain the Facebook URL while experimenting with posting the video to TB and Railimages.

What do you mean by ...share the URL with...."?

It's possible that the video is visible to me when I click on the posted URL above because it links to my Facebook account.

I'm curious why there appear to be restrictions when using Facebook URLs to upload videos into Railimages, when there appear to be none with uploading YouTube URLs.

I don't think the restrictions are on our side. I bet they are on FB's. I just copy/pasted the instructions - in our case, that means post it here. My bet, you have to first go in and make the settings for the video be "everyone can see" (which is not the FB default). I don't have any videos posted directly to my FB account (I use YouTube), else I would experiment.

You may have a point. I'll try that.

Edit: Nope, Sharing with the Public did not change anything with the Railimages upload process.

Nope, didn't work with embedding "Media" within a thread either.

Can you see the video now that I've shared it publicly on FB?

Oh well, I tried. Maybe I'll become a member of YouTube. I just think sharing the occasional video is kinda neat. Thanks for your help Rick. BTW, hope my Profile page didn't disclose too that might be embarrassing.

Not to derail the thread, but is there any way to upload .WAV or MP3 sound files? I have a couple of brief MILW Chicago-area scanner transmissions from about 1975.

Only those photo formats I listed previously. Those in your question can only be linked from an outside uploading site..

I had a similar question not long ago having taken some video of Polson Logging No. 2 a couple of weeks ago. It used to be easy, now like everything else that has been "improved" it no longer works for us who do not play with social media. I am running into this in many places.

I just uploaded a video to my face book page then copied the link then paste it here on train board and it worked fine! It was a video of my 3D printed Taylor Reachstacker for containers in Z scale!
