Since the CNW ran left-handed and the UP right-handed, how does the UP cross them over in places where the two lines met, such as Fremont,NE and CNW's coal lines in Wyoming. If it's as simple as just holding one train while another one waits, are there congestion problems, especially during busy periods?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I am not familiar with that area as I live in California, but what type of signalling do these lines have? If they are 2 Main Track CTC there could be "wrong way" running for quite some distance as the tracks would be set up for travel in either direction. If they were signalled as Double Track with ABS or what not (like the Santa Fe used to be on the Needles Sub)it would be necessary to cross them over. What type of operation do they have up there?

I might be able to help since I live in Fremont. The double main line is set up for both way operation on both tracks. The yard in Fremont is quite large and there are many crossover turnouts where the 2 lines come together. The former CNW line is single track and it is in the process of being doubled.

I guess it can't be a problem if the old CNW is still single track! I heard they were planing to double track it, but that was 2-3 years ago. I guess progress comes slowly!
