    Hi all,
I am working on an N scale layout that is freelanced but mainly all UP. I am trying to find rolling stock that would match my layouts theme and wondering if someone can give some guidance.

I am curious as to some of the road names that the UP would have on their system from about the 1990s on. This can (and should) include it's fallen flags. The two most notable that come to mind are C&NW and SP. What are some others?

Also, my industries are a lumber yard, brewery, fuel-distributor and a few others, what would be the best types of rolling stock? I'm sure box cars, but would center-beams be more realistic?

    Hopefully this makes sense.

    Thanks in advanced.

C&NW, MP, SP, DRGW, CMO and WP reporting marks are all over the system still.

For the 1990+ era, Centerbeams would be more common for delivering rough lumber. Veneer plywoods may go in a plug door hi-cube. Centerbeams length may depend heavily on your layout radiuses. You'll need tank cars for the fuel terminal.

Those cars can have most any reporting marks. They don't need to be UP or its subsiduiaries. The tank cars will most likely be privately held and the Centerbeams could be lease cars, like TTX.

Red Caboose makes/made Western Pacific "beer cars" and as Karl said, I know there are still WP covered hoppers running free unpatched.

Thanks for the info guys! This is super helpful.

What types of cars do you think would be appropriate for the brewery? I'm guessing outbound would be some sort of boxcar. Would hops arrive via hopper (haha, get it? ;)) or via boxcar?

I can recall still seeing a very few predecessors, such as (MOPAC) C&EI floating around. Then there were still a lot of (SP) Cotton Belts (SSW) as well.

Breweries get a variety of ingredients coming in via covered hoppers; I know malt sometimes is shipped in longer four bay hoppers.

You could have high cube boxcars coming in with packaging materials, and insulated boxcars for outbound shipment of the final product.

I'd imagine there are lots of photos from both the Coors and Budweiser breweries out there, both of which use rail extensively.

Dry distillers grain is a byproduct of the brewing, it is shipped out of the brewery in 4 Bay Hoppers like this:

Here's a photo of one of the Red Caboose Western Pacific "beer cars". From what I understand, these were used quite a bit at the Coors brewery in Boulder and there used to be a Falstaff brewery in San Jose, Ca. that they may have also visited.

Thanks, all! Let the hunt begin! I did find some hi-cubes today but only picked up one so far.

I spotted this PS2 hopper at Clewiston, FL, far from its former home rails, a few years ago. Sorry I was against the sun, so I tried to set some changes in contrast....

Don't whether it may be helpful, as it's no more within UP's fleet....
