Yikes. That will cost them a bunch of money. How did they get stopped? Were you able to make contact via an emergency number?

The track light system kicked in on the dispatcher's desk and he got the train to stop safely.

    Nice work there, Buddy...

For more than a decade I had a workshop adjacent to the UP mainline north out of Houston...My shop was about a hundred yards from the tracks and I would often hear flat spots on railcars of all types; mostly covered hoppers and tank cars...The noise was exactly as it sounds in your video and as I would stand on the shoulder of the road that ran parallel to the tracks and only 30 feet aside, the sound was very loud and clearly heard as the damaged wheel(s) hammered the top of the rail...These wheels with flat spots were very common; I dare say nearly every consist had at least one such car with a damaged wheel.

    Thanks for posting!

That wheel was trashed! I think it was shelling. Can anyone confirm? They are seriously fortunate that did not lead to a huge derailment. Makes you think twice about being so close to trackside when filming, eh?

Wow. Good thing it was caught when it was or that could have resulted in some very serious consequences.

I arrived at the repair site and they were at a walk bringing the car up to the crossing. :startled:
