I have been envisioning this for many years and finally did it because device needed was on sale for $2.00 !.. Those dishwashing gizmos that are a sponge with a handle where you pour in liguid soap into clear handle...I poured in 90% alcohol, squeezed sponge til it got moist and wound up flying down the tracks real fast..Sponge got filthy so I cleaned it with ..........a sponge ! ...It's unperfected in that alas tiny bits of sponge started showing up here and there..vey little though...Maybe one of you could find the way to modify this..I'm thinking of some type of penitrable material wrapped around sponge and maybe just held with a rubber band..I keep picturing slick, porous nylon square sheet...Take it off, wash it, put back on...I know there is something like this in train stores. But I found that out after I made mine...And their's has got to be expensive...Any dibbs guys ??

Wrap it in a microfiber eyeglass cleaning cloth that you can buy at Wal-Mart or any optometrist's shop for a few dollars. It won't shed fibers and can be tossed in the washing machine when you do laundry. The cloths usually come in a kit with a spray bottle of eyeglass cleaning solution. I have two that I have been using to clean track and wheels for years with no problems.
To clean wheels on locos, lay the cloth across the tracks, add a little alcohol at one edge, and hold your loco drives over it while running the motor. Just make sure that at least one power pickup is on the bare rails!
To clean wheels on cars, lay the cloth over a curve, add alcohol, and roll your cars over the wet patch by hand.

Peter, thanks for tips. Yeah, I did find out that the sponge which comes with it gets snagged on rail ends and points and breaks off little sponge pieces..So your cloth idea sounds like the ticket..
