Well seems my first posting was corrupt maybe Gats did something. Firstly does anyone have a picture of the desert storm locomotive that Union Pacific painted? Maybe they could post the pic in this forum. I am trying to convince Gats to custom paint a SD40-2 in the same livery. So far he has refused the challenge so maybe we can all get together and convince him [IMG].
Come on Gats where is that Aussie grit? lol

This paint scheme is definitely not a bigginers one. All of the camouflage on the locomotive has to be done by masking and painting (don't know why Microscale didn't make the darker shapes a bunch of decals??). But for you sake Colonel, come on gats!!!! Give it a try!!!!

There is a pic of it on a website in June 1997, sorry to say, it's back in armor yellow and harbor mist gray.

FYI.......I think that the Pulling for United Way SD40-2 has the record for being on the rails the longest in a speacial paint scheme (for UP, that is).
    Have fun painting! [IMG]

Thanks Craig and Alan for your replies. Gary is an accomplished modeller and I know he would do a great job (suck suck)LOL. Don't you guys think it would be just great seeing a web page on how to do a custom paint job of this locomotive?

Craig, the darker brown (a FS colour) was sprayed freehand after some of the shop employees went 'next door' to Fort Bragg and sat in on a batch of Humvees being painted. They then came back and took 4 days to create this unique paint scheme.
And, Colonel, if you think I am going to turn this loco around in 4 days too, YOU ARE MISTAKEN! (that's _if_ I decide to take this on... [IMG] )

Seeing I also have some experiance in modeling 1/48 scale millitary model planes, I can assure you this paint scheme isn't that hard, if you have a good airbrush. It's the colors you might have some fun finding the right shades for it. But, then again, I think most of the Patra and Testors millitary flat sets would have the right colors.

BLW's model looks pretty good, BUT, the thing they lacked on was the amount of dark brown shapes there are on the locomotive. If I was to do this locomotive (I am also a painter), I would take my time and cut out a TON of shapes for the dark bron (instead of just a couple of big ones). But over all, it looks great!

Hey Colonel, what about the UP SD40-2 in the Pulling for United Way paint scheme.....I like that one a lot! (from a painters stand point it's a lot easier too) [IMG]

Here is the link to the BLW loco.
    http://www.blwnscale.com/Opening%20Page.htm

Click on "Legacy locos" which is on the left hand side, then scroll down to SD40-2.....click there, and you will see it! Looks pretty good.

Thanks for the URL'd Craig. I think I much prefer the desert storm rather than the other anyway Gats already has the decals for the Desert Storm scheme. The BLW loco looks great but i'm sure Gats can do a better job (suck)

I think a howto web site on this would be great! And Gats is just the guy to do it. In fact, he is propbably the only custom painter to be able to produce a truly authentic model and write a how to on the web. Gats has the experience, Gats has the skill, Gats is the MAN!! And remeber, women love a man who custom paint an UP SD40-2 in Desert Storm Livery [IMG]

Colonel you can send me the check anytime you are ready [IMG]
