Information I've gleaned online and from museum members is that they'll lay some "snap track" 9/10 mile northerly across the parking lot of the LA County Fairgrounds from where 4014 is now parked, to live rail. Metrolink runs daily on this line, and being that it's welded rail....I'm not sure how they're working around this.

4014 will be transferred first to Colton, where bearing work will be done before the haul to Cheyoming.

maybe the prototypical "0-5-0" will reach down from the sky! I would assume cranes will have to lift her up and then lower her....OR the UP will bring in a crew, cut the rail, lay a switch....

    Update from another post:

I went to the L.A. County Fairgrounds yesterday and discovered a whole bunch of UPRR Steam crew employees getting 4014 ready to move to Cheyenne. All 4 pistons were out and sitting on pallets, and they were working on removing the steam valve pistons and some of the linkages, carefully tagging each part so it can go back into the right spot when they put it back together. So it is really happening - not just another rumor on the internet.

Well, it was on UP's website. I think that proved it wasn't a rumor.

Yes. It was an official announcement by UP. No doubt then, and very obvious now.

This is wonderful for the preservation of operational steam. My regret is that nobody seems eager to restore one of the two remaining C&O H-8 Alleghanys.

These days, it seems that of the Class 1 companies, only UP and NS really comprehend the value of PUBLIC relations. (Public relations require expending both money and time. When done properly, they return more money.) Yes, others have made *some* limited effort- But very limited.

UP should be using the money that they collect from the model manufactures for the use of all their logos.

Same as with model locos. I'll bet every railfan in the world knows what a Big Boy is and would travel half way round the world to see and ride behind one if they had the chance but mention 'Alleghany' to anyone but a C&O fan and the answer will be "A what?".

OT here- Does anyone know of perhaps a YouTube video where we could watch, and especially, listen to an H-8 in action?
