I thought I'd start a new topic to keep folks from having to thumb through the old one on U18B's. I finished scanning and posting the last of my U18B photos to my website: http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/ Here's one of the rarer (for me) units repainted in the new CSX scheme.... this unit was blowing by me at about 40 m.p.h. and I was standing trackside with a manual focus 35mm camera... John, I am sorry to say that I have been through my last 6 months of photos, but have not come across any "Big Blue" photos. I have not given up hope yet and will keep looking. Harold

When I was in my "heyday" of photographing trains (1985-1993) it was always a surprise what I'd find at a CSX or NS yard. Nowadays, it is much more mundane (especially on NS, less so on CSX which has more lease units and run throughs). The "rarer" units, such as U18's, GP39's, etc. were always a special treat for me Harold
Over a year ago before I started monitering TrainBoard, I have always Thought a U Boat was a German Sub. Then I noticed you guys refering a Engine as a U Boat. All this time I could not figure out what you ment by U Boat. I finally decided to show how stuped I am and ask. " WHAT IS A U BOAt???" Dick, "U-Boat" was the nickname for GE locos from the early 60's until they came out with "Dash" series in the late 70's or early 80's. GE classified their early road locos by application, horsepower, and wheel arrangement. For example, the U-25B stood for "U" - Universal; "25" - 2500HP; and "B" - two axles per truck. I believe the models ranged from the U-15B to the largest, the U-50C which consisted two U-25C's spliced together on a single frame. I'm in Baltimore for the holiday, but I'll check as soon as I get home tomorrow. I'll post the scans in a new topic. I like those cars (as well as Baby U-boats!), and I'm pretty happy with how the Walthers model turned out - need to add some brake line details though... Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Harold, I couldn't have explained the "U-boat" saying any better! Dave, THANKS! I sure would appreciate a picture of the CSX "Big Blue" box car(s) I'm going to use a picture to paint and decal a few HO scale box cars so I have something to run with my newer CSX diesels.... I got a ton of rolling stock... Litterally! But its all steam era stuff... Not to much present era stuff and I got present day loco's... Just don't look right with a train from the 40's and 50's! So... I'm adding to my fleet of rostered cars for the present day era stuff....
