Hi everyone, I am a new subscriber to Trains and it's ok but find it a bit too business-heavy for me. I'm a Railfan who likes the photos and the mechanical side of things. I just learned about the existence of Railfan & Railroad and am wondering if anyone who has read or subscribe to it can comment on it? It may be a better fit for me. Thanks in advance.
Both have their own followings, for whatever the reader prefers. It has been too many years since I was an R&R subscriber. I was aboard there many years, and liked it more than Trains. That was when it was still owned by Carstens. Would it be worth trying a subscription, and seeing where that takes you?
Thanks for your response. Ya I'm leaning towards cancelling Trains and going with R&R. Like I said I like Trains but the in-depth business stuff makes me lose interest fast.
I've noticed the last couple of years, Trains is more commercial, I wanna' say versus R&R which has been more railfan oriented. I've always been an R&R fan ever since 1980, with an occasional Trains magazine here and there if it had a local to me article.
Thanks Kurt. You sold me. I'm going to cancel Trains and subscribe to R&R, sounds more of what I'm looking for. Sent from my SM-G973W using Tapatalk
As a non modeler and a steam fan of 12 inch to the foot rails, I liked R&R much better than Trains. I subscribe to neither now that I can't get out to fan.
I reached out to R&R with a story idea based on Minot railroading. They accepted the idea, now to write the story... Depending on how this goes, I have ideas for stories or articles on fanning the CP Portal Sub and the Northgate Branch.
Between the two, I'd also suggest go with R&R based on your interest. You might also want to see if there is a bookstore like Barnes & Noble or news stand near you that carries it so you can check out an issue or two to see if you like it.
That's a good summary Kurt. I dropped my subscription to Trains a decade ago because of my increased disinterest in its content. I moved my subscription to Classic Trains which is really well done and on target with my interest in older railroading.
Yes, I was thinking of doing that. I am in Canada and a 1-yr subscription would be $72. That stings a bit... I will keep my Classic Trains subscription. I agree it is really well done.
