    Folks,

We are way behind in doing our promised server change. As you all probably can imagine there is a lot to it. We are starting to get things ready now and it looks like that we will be starting this process within 48 to 72 hours, maybe an additional day later but anticipated by Thursday of this week.

TrainBoard will be down for some time but we do not know how long. A few hours, maybe a day at the worst unless there is a major problem. We don't think there will be major problems. There will probably be some problems but we will tackle them one at a time.

We already had a telethon and we are using that money for this project, both the server payments and the move. If anyone feels like donating or has been considering it, this would be a good time but there is no emergency or urgent need for donations. We like to encourage people to become supporters but we don't want to push people so no big worry right now. We do have 64 special run cars left and selling some of those would be good as well! I am confident that we will sell them all this year, and we are brewing more ideas as well, including the likely possibility of a TrainBoard car which we have been discussing.

We will update as necessary on the serve move.

    Charlie

Thanks for the status and your apparent success, Charlie. Fortunately your "small snag" must have been really small because TB appears to be operating smoothly. Though the next few days of use by inexperienced and unforgiving TB members will be the real test.

Can TB survive? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of "As The Server's Stomach Grumbles"...LOL

Hytec, moving a large site is a royal pain, the worst part is the speed of your connection limits you on how fast you can upload the files....

If those files need to be downloaded first,.... Double the whole process time. Ouch.

downloading is faster than uploading. the ISP's limit it to try to make the average web surfer's experience a happy one

I assume whichever company that Charlie contracted to perform the upgrade transfer is doing it in-house using their own inter-server cabling, probably T-1 bandwidth or greater. I'm sure they would not go through an ISP, because that transfer would be out their control and an additional expense.

A few delays as the prep work for the server change has slowed things down a hair. We are still looking at starting this just about any time.

Configuring the DNS can be a pain. Are you going to register your own nameservers

Purely anecdotal evidence, but TB appears to be responding one heckuva lot faster with the new server.

Charlie, Thank You very much for your effort and time.

I was getting ready to type that exact same thing when I read this post. TB is reacting much faster to searches. Thanks for keeping the drive wheels greased!
