    Gert-

    Welcome aboard!

If what you are asking, concerns stored surplus railroad equipment, nothing comes into mind right now.

Here in North America, once the original owner has decided they are through with something, it's usually resold to a second user. When there is an economic downturn, rolling stock and locos are sometimes mothballed where they can quickly be recalled.

Only on occasion are items held for future disposition. If there is not enough value in resale, it gets scrapped. (If you keep it, but don't use it, our government still taxes the daylights out of you for having it! So they scrap them to escape taxation!) Sometimes, the "scrap it as fast as possible" philosophy backfires. And the railroads regret it. Just a poor business decision, bad timing, bad luck. It's an odd business.

A very few special items may escape the cutting torch, make their way to a museum.

Airplanes are another subject. And there are many stored in desert areas. Most will never be used again. But the market for their parts is good. Railroads are quite different.
