I don't know if this thread has been done already, but how about one on towers? To start things off, here is my local tower, Fresh Pond Yard tower in Queens, NY: The tower was built circa 1925 by the LIRR and was originally known as DF tower. Here is a pic as it appeared in the early 1980's: Russ
Good thread! Over here we call them Signal Boxes. This is the box at Lostwithiel, Cornwall, with a Virgin HST passing. This box has a lot of action as it's the junction for a short but busy freight branch. Most 'boxes on the British network have closed and been demolished. This box at Dawlish is disused but survives for now. In it's time it would have controlled a section of the main line, plus access to the small goods yard on the left (now the station car park.) This box came out of service in around 1985/86, with control of the line passing to a centralised control room in Exeter. Some survive in preservation, this is Bewdley box on the Severn Valley railway, with a Black 5 4-6-0 waiting for the road. Sorry for posting pics i've done before, but these were handy! [ 13. Here's a southbound empty ore train passing the Deshler, Ohio tower... ********** Here's the tower in Leipsic, Ohio... ********** More to follow!
Martyn, Brian- Great pics! Here is the only other tower pic that I have on file at this moment. This is "J" Tower also known in the past as Lemo tower. It originally resided at Lemoyne, Pennsylvania - across the river from Harrisburg. It now resides and was restored by the Strasburg RR. It is also an historical landmark: Russ Hoffman
Russ, It does not matter if a topic has been done before. If it is worthy of a repeat after a lapse of time, it will probably attract some who did not see the first round. I believe I did see one or two of your pix before, but, as you can see, they triggered some good responses with new shots. So, go ahead and give our newer members a chance to see some of our previous work.
Things do not look good for that tower Martyn. In the first picture that you posted, I didn't even realize that it was boarded up! Also in the first shot of that tower, I love the way the modern train accents the historical infrastructure. Beautiful! Russ Hoffman
CP KOREN Tower, LaGrange Park, IL Milepost 31.3 on the Indiana Harbor Belt mainline Also, it is in my backyard. Happy Railfanning KEN
Martyn, very nice stuff. Russ, even though I have just posted this on another thread, I thought your tower in Strasburg needed exposure with a proper steam engine in the scene.
