Hi Andy, We seem to have a some in common, I'm starting constuction on an N scale Layout that is Free-lanced and has heavy CSX influence, in the Area ALSO. I'm modeling My Turf; North Central West Virginia, and into extreme western portions of Maryland. If you have any Questions, concerns, or else, email me at : pat_miller2855@yahoo.com

Moose, and by the way my old radio station was nicknamed "moose" so you're ok.

As I was saying... Everyone, including yourself has missed one very important part of the entire equation. YOUR SON IS 3 1/2. HO and N will be too small and hard for him to play with.(aside from the fact if he trashes a loco that small with his little fingers you're going to be, shall we say grumpy.)

    Why not go LGB.

He can hold them and move them and there're big enough that he can't break 'em.

I don't care what part of the country you're from, a garden RR is a lot of fun, and besides just tell his mom "well we're getting some fresh air." She'll love some time alone!

Being 6'7" 320 I not to sure how I got the nickname Moose [IMG]

WT&C, I'll be sendin ya an email shortly.

Chris, I had blown the cobwebs off my N-scale equipment and put them on the table to see how he would react. Boy was he facinated! He asked he he could touch one, but basically left them alone. After some discussion with the wife and watching him, I'm leaning towards HO, but N isn't ruled out completely. I also took him to the GATS in philadelphia a couple weeks ago. He seemed to like the HO layouts the best.

The track plan will have a loop so he can watch em run, and point to point so I can have some operational fun. I've got a 6'x18' area in the garage to work with.

Now with that space I can have a mini empire in N scale, but shopping around, Im a bit dissapointed in lack of modern power as there is in HO. Now don't get me wrong N has come along way since I was last involved with it. (Even found a BN Kato GP50 with orange tiger stripes in my box, don't remember buying that one [IMG] ) but whats up with "limited" runs? I hate that, they're forcing a buying frenzy and if you snooze, you looze.

Oh well, I'm still on schedule with getting the layout area setup and what not. Sure does feel great to be back into the hobby again!! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] (And the little guy adds all that more to the fun!)

    Moose,
Do us all a favor and keep us informed on your progress. And good luck to you and your son- you're following in the footsteps of a lot of other fathers whose sons got into
    the hobby.

Above all, remember- it's just a hobby, so have fun! [IMG]

You have a Tiger BN GEEP 50! [IMG] What else do you have in this little box of yours? I mean, if you're going with HO, you won't be needing that Tiger, will you? <marquee>I GET FIRST DIBS! [IMG]</marquee>

With my (now) 6 and 11 year old sons, I've had "my" HO layout and "their" O layout -- my 11 yr old is now getting into HO (even asking for engine and houses for Christmas) so we may be merging the two tables. When they were both younger, I was very happy to have the postwar American Flyer O guage equipment (read heavy and indestructable) for the kids to "use". For myself, I do have an N loop and train (as well as some "S" from my youth) and for me, with my fingers and eyes, HO is as small as I would like to go. It's great that there are so may options in HO for everything (and there's generally enough space in the engines for DCC decoders, sometimes even sound...). N does work "way" better now than it did, but it's still too small for me.

I am one that has and am still fighting with this choice as I build my for now HO scale Alabama Northern.
Here are my reasons it is ho
If you go diesel and want the best that will be kato in that case keep plenty of money in your pocket and keep up with what is going to be released pre order when you can and wait for ever till it gets here.

I like 55 ton hoppers there is no comparison in price between scales HO $5 and up not to bad N around $15 and I hope you dont want variety in that. There is even a limit on the amount of undecorated you can buy in some cases.

I really like N scale alot but it is still behind Ho by quite a bit.
