The Goose is Loose Worldwide, the story of a mythical bird rising from the ashes usually invokes the image of the Phoenix. But in Yreka, California the resurrected bird is a goose. A Blue Goose, to be exact. On Saturday, Jun03, the town’s biggest tourist attraction, Yreka Western Railroad’s Blue Goose Excursion Train, returned to action. City officials, locals and tourists were on hand to join in on the fun. And although, thanks to railroad regulations, the general public will have to wait until Jun14 for the actual excursions to begin, Saturday morning’s affair was filled with activity. A live radio remote from KSYC's Bob Martin, a visit from Operation Lifesaver, and a speech by Yreka Mayor Rory McNeill were just a few of the highlights of the day. The star attraction, however, was old #19 huffing and puffing up and down the tracks, giving attendees plenty of opportunities to take snapshots or videotape the newly rebuilt steam engine. In case anyone failed to hear the whistle blow that morning, Tommy Henry, 2, in attendance with mom Carrie Henry, had this to report to readers: “It goes toot.” For more information about fares and schedules, call 842-4146 or visit www.yrekawesternrr.com. - Tim Rios, The Siskiyou Daily News
