I was just remembering all the times of watching tv baseball games.... on Saturdays a few years ago. In the 1950's, and into the 1960's. A huge tradition when Peewee Reese was broadcasting, was his partner Dizzy Dean. Who every game would launch into a rendition of "The Wabash Cannonball."

You are correct Boxcab. My wife and I loved to listen to Pee Wee and Dizzy broadcasting the games and especially when Dizzy would sing the Wabash Cannonball. If nothing else, that made the game worth listening to. [IMG] [IMG] :D

    The Wabash Cannonball
    Hobo Ballad
    Written By: Theodore Dreiser
    Copyright Unknown

    From the great Atlantic Ocean
    To the wide Pacific shore
To the queen of flowing mountains
To the southbell by the door
She's long and tall and handsome
And loved by one and all
    She's a modern combination
    Called the Wabash Cannonball

    Oh listen to the jingle
    The rumble and the roar
As she glides along the woodlands
Through the hills and by the shores
Hear the mighty rush of engines
    Hear the lonesome hobos' call
    We're travelling through the jungles
    On the Wabash Cannonball

    The eastern states are dandies
    So the western people say
From New York to St. Louis
    And Chicago by the way
    Through the hills of Minnesota
    Where the rippling waters fall
    No chances can be taken
    On the Wabash Cannonball

    Oh listen to the jingle
    The rumble and the roar
As she glides along the woodlands
Through the hills and by the shores
Hear the mighty rush of engines
    Hear the lonesome hobos' call
    We're travelling through the jungles
    On the Wabash Cannonball

    Here's to Daddy Klaxton
    May his name forever stand
    And always be remembered
Through the courts throughout the land
    His earthly race is over
Now the curtains 'round him fall
We'll carry him home to victory
    On the Wabash Cannonball!

Barb, we should start a thread on "how many artists recorded that song??" I think the first time I heard it, it was Johnny Cash. There were many bluegrass artists who did it. How about some others?
