Here is some official CSX propganda on the issue...

    Dear Fellow Railroader,

Yesterday, the FBI issued a warning to state and local law enforcement agencies that the U.S. railroads could be the target of a terrorist attack. We have been in contact with the Department of Transportation, the Transportation Security Administration and the intelligence community. As a result, CSX and the rail industry are operating at a heightened state of alert.

Since the tragedies of September 11, we have periodically reminded employees to be observant about their surroundings and report any suspicious persons or activities.

Your vigilance is now particularly important.

No one is allowed on CSX property or locomotives without proper identification. Anyone entering our property must identify himself or herself as an employee, contractor, federal or state inspector (FRA, NTSB, Public Utilities Commission, etc.) and must have the proper identification. You should immediately report anyone without proper identification or any suspicious activity by contacting your local supervisor or the CSXT Police Communications Center at 1-800-232-0144.

It's easy to allow current events to distract us. Now more than ever, our nation needs the transportation services we provide. Let's all stay focused on safety and service, while being vigilant about security.

    Thanks for your help,

    Al Crown
    Executive Vice-President - Transportation

Got this off the CSX Louisville Division webpage. What do you guys think?

You mean they're not arming the engineers and crew with riot guns yet?

Sounds like good sensible advice and precautions. Also for railfans to be sensible and careful not to do anything to arouse suspicion. Railfans are also in a good position to notice suspicious acts and report them.

Sounds like a warning to railfans: prepare for scrutiny! Even though you may be shooting photos from public property, you will still fall under the scrutiny of nervous train crews.

Wouldn't be the first time I was patted down.
    (JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!)
I feel safer knowing that someone is watching something, somewhere.
We must never let our guard down.
It's likely that something evil will happen again, and it may not be in a big city.
It can happen in any one of our countries also.
    In any small town.
Ya gotta keep aware of anything out of the ordinary.
Just watch the news at night.
    We are NOT safe.
    Not anywhere.
Not until we crush the evil doers like waterbugs in an alleyway around the dumpsters at dawn. Just walk down the line and crush them as they flee in terror like evil vermin does.

The same warning, almost right down to the word, has been issued at least 3 times in the past year, While Im not telling anyone to drop they're guard, keep a eye out there.

I think it is safe to say that since the events of 9/11/01, we have to realize that we (as Americans) have been spoiled as far as "safety" is concerned. While many countries have had to deal with daily bombings, shootings, etc., we have always felt free & safe in our country. 9/11/01 changed that and unfortunately showed us that we are vulnerable to attacks of any kind or size. While this is not meant to be any kind of political threat or "warning" by me, common sense will tell you that we as a country must realize that there are many others that hate us, our way of life, and what we stand for. As such, we will always be "targets". This is in all forms of life and business, not just railroading, but power plants, water supply, public & sporting events, etc. Everyone has a heightened state of awareness. That is just the reality of today.

Unfortunately Harold this does not just involve America anymore but the whole Western Civilisation. As an Australian we were plunged into terrorism when over 100 Australians were killed by a terrorist attack in Bali last month.

Our whole country is now on similar alerts as your own. We all have to be aware of the ever present dangers but still need to carry out our daily tasks to ensure our way of life is not compromised by a small minority.

As Harold stated this is not a policitcal statement I actually administor this site because railroading is my hobby and takes me away from the world we live in. Unfortunately the problems we experience in the real world are also having an effect on my pastime.
