Pete, you have reinforced our decision to live in the deep south. Your photo is similar to what we experienced at the summit of Mt. Washington, NH, having arrived aboard the Cog Railway, also in mid-August. Nice place to visit in summer, I believe last year it occurred on July 23rd about 3:00 PM......:tb-rolleyes:
I went to Calgary in February--it was -35 that day! No snowfall that trip, however. It's funny how ferenheit and celcius meet around -35 degrees.....
Yes, they do get close just past minus 35. Alaska being adjacent to the Pacific Ocean uses a lot of the moisture, before it can get over to Alberta. No....it is just cold! I know that Hemi misses going out in these shots. So do I. It use to be quiet in the house. Now...I hear trains and trucks coming from the computer.
Mt Washington in late June: 93 F at the base, a total white-out at 0 F at the summit. I've written about that trip. Let me see if I can find it.
Ill bet the slog up the Hill there before Louisville was interesting!I ran trough some snow on the FRS but never that much! I dont mind it being cold ( some days) but I gotta agree with moving south as I get older lol. I dont know though. BNSF talked about selling the FRS off ( I dont know why seriously) maybe if RA or Omni bought it would go back in a heartbeat.
Cold is not so bad, as I've been in -63 F. Wind is the killer. BTW, it's true that your spit will freeze before it hits the ground at -50 F. If you are not careful, it will freeze before it gets out of your mouth. When it gets that cold, you really have to dress appropriately--which means a real Arctic look. At about -63 F your teeth will crack if exposed. Been there, done that. Keeping cameras functional becomes a problem. If it's -63 F. on the ground, it's colder 2000 feet up, moving at 60 knots.
When I crossed the Maine/Quebec border, it was -63 F, with a 40 MPH wind. I was covering the story about the severe cold.
Yes, the pics are awesome. I'm sorry if I diverted this thread away from admiring some awesome pics--but they were evocative, which means they were excelllent. I am cleaning out my Albuquerque house this week, and might stumble upon some Eastern winter shots. I used to think of them as bad; now these gloomy shots can be art!
Great photo's Mikel. Would be pretty cold but worth it when taking this very nice photo's. I'm jalouse not being there too .
