A spring storm dumped about 15" of snow today here in Broomfield, CO. My boss let us out of work around 12:30. I was hoping to catch a train on the Front Range Sub in this heavy snowfall even though conventional wisdom says stay home. I headed up to Louisville spotting a couple of places along the way where I wanted to get a shot once I heard a Southbound was called out of Longmont. I left my apartment around 4 pm and waited in Louisville until about 6:15 when she finally made her appearance. Here is a shot of the 7437 leading the SB sulfur train out of Bonneville, WY about to cross under the Hwy 42 overpass. This second shot is of the molten sulfur cars passing the Nickel St crossing in Broomfield at about 35 mph. The road conditions and the stink'n red lights made it impossible to get the other shots I had planned. I should have stayed here in Broomfield and caught the lead unit busting the drift made by the snow plows. Had the perfect opportunity and missed it. Oh well. Maybe there will be a next time. This final shot is of the DPU's passing the Nickel St crossing in a whirl wind of blowing snow. Bad luck with all the red stop lights but good luck having both DPU's facing backward!
Great Stuff, it took me awhile to get home after work closed the office but I'm sure glad you took the time to get these shots! :tb-cool: :tb-cool: :tb-cool: :tb-cool:
Great shots! And to think that I was complaining about it snowing over here on the Western Slope. I wish all of you on the Front Range warmth and safety. Ben
It took us close to an hour to get back to the shop from the restaurant for lunch! Of course, today is bright sunshine - snow turning to steam in nothing flat!
Having grown up in Louisville, just north of Broomfield, I can attest to savage spring storms. Awesome shots...railroading is an all weather job!
On the contrary, Pete--I wish I was out in it with Mike! Some of our most favorite shots were in the worst mountain weather imaginable!
I guess I'm getting old and soft! I've faced some truly miserable weather in my days as a news producer and made some of my favorite shots then--if the camera didn't freeze. 16mm film gets brittle at -60 F. I'll have to find a photo from my last trip to Alaska, in late August, up near Tok.
Total whiteout behind me on August 16, 2006. There's supposed to be mountains back there. I'm squinting because of the snow. I don't shave very often in Alaska.
Heard from a friend this morning. A pal of his had sent some Alaska RR pix of their troubles in snow just recently. Yikes! A train buried in a snow slide... Looks like this Front Range action was in a bit better weather! Boxcab E50
That Tougher in Alaska show recently had a RR episode, and it detailed snowfighting on the ARR. Sounds brutal! Pete, that was August? Snowing like that?!? Yikes!
