Biased or not, the design of the ALCO PA/FA and the likes is really distinctive. I ran into lenghts into securing an ALCO PA to pull my PRR special, alternating with the at least so distinctive GG1.
Ah, the GG1... another distinctive and beautiful - and near indestructible - icon of railroading. Loewy really had a talent for designing great locos, among other things. For that matter, if one looks at all the designers of that era, Loewy, Dreyfuss, Kuhler, etc. They had class. No two designs really resembled one another but each had one signature feature that was distinctive of the designer. And the PA... another beautiful lady.
From June 1980 at Ringoes, NJ, Black River & Western's 204, a former M&StL 547 RS-1. I'm thinking that in never ran in BR&W service, but I'm not certain. I wonder if that's a steam-era bell and such a great location too! Unit was scrapped.
As found in Cornelia, GA in June 1985 at Johnson Railway Service was Savannah River Site's RS-1 #105. Johnson is a locomotive rebuilder. I'm not sure what became of this unit.
As soon as I saw the photo, my first thought was this is an ex-M&St.L unit! Sad that it was scrapped. Yes, that bell goes way back. Pre-Korean War, years, ex-steam.
Oops, I misidentified the Alco I mentioned in my last post as an RS-2. It is an RS-3. It's still poor, little, and old, though. Doug
A look at some Chattahoochee Industrial RS-1s at Cedar Springs, GA in March 1987. The last slide is of former A&StAB 912, bought for parts.
You're right -- that's the railroad! I think it stemmed from the CIRR's hauling of materials for a local dam. Somehow people took offense to the slogan and it was done away with. Atlas made an N Scale model of a 40' Boxcar long ago and M-T did a 50' I think.
I am thinking it was the Chattahoochee River dam. I am subject to correction on this point. But they were by a dam site at least until construction completed. If they were offended by this slogan, I hope they don't hear current media or go to wallmutt's on Saturday mornings.
A few more shots of Black River & Western Alco power, all shot at Ringoes, NJ in September of '82. These are all long off the roster, but I think the 56 and 1554 survive elsewhere. No. 56 is a former PRR T-6 No. 211 is a former Wisconsin Central RS-1 No. 1554 is a former CNJ RS-3
L&N 1318 taken February 1979 in Knoxville, TN, a high hood C-420 originally equipped with a steam generator by the Monon.
