Does anyone have any suggestions for soldering brass details? I'm trying to solder some brass pipe details to air pumps and not having much luck.

Check out this MRH thread. Mike does some AMAZING working scratch building cars. Scroll down to where he builds his own brass ladders for some info like you are looking for http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/2684

you need a resistance soldering iron set up for best results. Other wise with a regular soldering iron, the areas around your work will get too hot and cause problems.

Not true I have soldered together very fine details with a butane type solder iron it is all in the technique.I actually have a resistance solder iron and only really use it for REALLY delicate stuff I just feel more comfortable with a nice hot iron.

Use a good flux this is imperative and make sure your solder iron has enough heat to do what you want it to do.
