    To answer a few questons I have had about building the Josephina, a 1869 business car for the board of directors of the C&NW here is the story.

    I started this car about 25+ years ago after seeing an article about it in RMC. It looked just like the unusual kind of rolling stock that my RR would have. I used thin styrene about 15 thousands thick to cut out the car sides. The car had to have about four layers lamanated together for the woodwork so I had to start thin so as not to end up with sides that were too thick.
    This went along pretty good and I had the basic car finished, set it aside and came back to it in about a week. Well,,, the many applications of liquid plastic glue had weakened the sides so that there was a distinct warp.
    So I thought that if I cut the sides out of brass they would not warp.
    [IMG]
    The sides were cut out of brass and then holes drilled where the windows should be and then file, file, file, file.
    [IMG]
    Then a strip of narrow brass was sweat soldered to the side which would have to be filed again to bring back the shape of the windows.

    This is where I set the project aside and forgot about it until recently. I took another look at the car and had a idea. Instead of file,file,file, what if I could straighten out the original sides? I still had some brass angle shapes left over from the suspension bridge so I gave it a try.

    [IMG]
    By cutting into the top of the partitions seperating the rooms I was able to put in two brass angles to brace the car and straighten it out fairly well. This picture shows the angles at the top and the interior before the seats and other furniture was put in.

    I did not have to use the brass sides so Now I can build a free-lanced car with them.
    The next photo gets back to the basic construction of the car;
    [IMG]
    In the photo you can see the layers that are needed to give the impression of the wood car. Also note the turnbuckle on the outside of the car. This was neccessary because the center is lower than the two ends and regular turnbuckles would not work.

    The next photo shows the roof;
    [IMG]
    The roof was made out of wood with the celestory windows built up. I think the dome was part ornimental and part fuctional with a fan. The little "flags" might have been used to catch the wind and help provide ciculation, but I am not sure as right below eeach "flag" is a chandelier. You can make them out through the windows.

    Next the under-side of the roof;
    [IMG]
    Here you can see the chandeliers better

    The stove pipe had a strange twist to it;
    [IMG]
    The roof is covered with tissue paper and painted with Floquill's Wheatered Black and then wheatered some more.

    The bottom of the car;
    [IMG]
    You can see how low the center is here. The car had two sets of trucks at each end. In 1869 a 80' car was vert long and needed the extra support.

    There are a few more photos at;
    http://www.railimages.com/gallery/johnwidmar?page=3
    They show the directors table and chairs in the center of the car. At each end of the directors room there are two small rooms for the seceretaries and then the seats at each end of the car along with complete rest rooms.

    William,
    Guess you're gonna have to talk to Brian about the arrival time of the VARR cars. :D
    I was really expecting tomorrow or Tuesday actually. Especially with anythong federal being closed Friday for the Reagan Funeral. [IMG]

    Otherwise, just lucky I guess!!! [IMG]

    As usual, between the time I opened this topic and I got to the reply areas three more posts were added. Probably be six more by the time I'm finished. Note: there were indeed six more, and I'm not even on the same page I started on! [IMG]

    Here's some shots I'd taken Memorial Day to store up for the Atlas SNFF, so I'll post 'em here.

    Here are my pics of the clouds that I added to the back drops that I had done earlier in the week. I used the stencils from New London industries.

    I just used the cheap spray bombs from wal mart. Try to find a paint that would resemble the storm clouds, a kind of gray is what I was looking for. No luck. After breathing all th efumes, I thought I should have used the air brush I had, oh well.

    [IMG]
    [IMG]

    Well that is it for now. I need to get the backdrop up on the island that I have. And then continue with the clouds. Adios till then, Wyatt

    Dave, in answer to your question, this is a Hallmark brass over Kato chassis SD45 that a good friend from my Belmont Shore days, Bob Hansen did. One day I happened to scan eBay and there it was! I was fortunate they never went up to the max I was prepared to pay! [IMG] Here are a few more pics:

    [IMG]

    As you can tell, Bob has no fear when it comes to putting paint to any model! I'm still mustering up the courage to get there! LOL

    This is my second attempt at weathering. I used pastels to do this that I bought at a local craft store. I dirtied up this MDC set of overtons to go with my atlas mogul.

    I also finished up my resin 1/1400 model of the nx-01. I used glow paints on it to light it up being its only 5.5 inches long. I also used the above weathering techniques on it. Because it doesn’t have anything to do with trains I’ll just link to the pictures

    Well I got nothing done this past few weeks. Between my daughters birthday, traveling on business and trying to sleep, well the railroad took a back seat. So here are a few oldies but hope you think goodies. Since the layout has changed so much over the last 8 months since I started I am going to remove all the photos posted at RailImages next week and replace with current pictures. Here is the last you will see of these.

    Just after I got my much sot after GP-30's.

    Looking great everyone!

    This weekend I did a little weathering and installed Z scale body mounted couplers on my new Auto-Max's. The Z scale coupler reduce the HUGE space between the cars and gives them a more prototypical look to boot! On top of that, I went through and highlighted the trucks with orange and silver paint as per pictures of the prototype.

    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    The white dots on top of this car were removed after the photo. :eek:
    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    The weathered cars still need another coat of dust/flat to get the right look.

    Also, I have done a lot of work on my website and made some new announcements! See the link below.
