No no no...! I mean if my refrigerator car had real journal boxes they'd have been smoking last night...This is a real kookie ocurrence :... While cleaning crud off car wheel treads last night and checking gauges of, this one reefer I have coasts Ok in one direction but binds up in other direction...I checked everything I could with NMRA track guage tool and even added labelle oil in journals..It's now on the RIP track and was probably reason I was getting slipping on grades...Blessing in disguise though as it got me to clear out all poor rolling cars ( til I buy state of the art trucks or just start a collection of all new rolling stock )...Anyone know how this binding ( hot box ) happens in one direction only ?? !!
do you have a truck reaming tool? sometimes a little flash in a truck bearing will stick a car in one direction.
What he said - if you don't have a truck reaming tool you need one, especially if you have any early Tyco/AHM/Bachmann rolling stock. I have saved much $$ by using this tool on those old trucks to accept modern metal wheelsets. Also - dust and lint can collect in the bearing cups over time, to where the wheels will not roll freely. The tool is great for cleaning them out.

Sounds like there is some slack in the system so in one direction friction causes a truck and/or wheelset to move back so the wheel touches a fixed part. That contact will 'brake' the wheel thus driving it further into the fixed part, causing the the 'hunker down' effect. You need to look really closely at all the parts as you make this happen - it's gotta be in there somewhere.
Send your reefer to me and get new ones..LOL Ok truck assy binding while rolling in other direction. Did you turn car around 180 and stiull does it? Sounds like one of the trucks/wheels are in contact with under carraige ever so slightly. IMO
Smoking reefer with beer by any chance?:uhoh: Could cause a really nasty train wreck hboy:! Seriuosly, I'd just change out both trucks and hopefully be done with the problem.
Take the trucks off? Does it bind if you push the truck around? If yes: Then you need the trucks reamed. If no: Then it's related to the Reefer car. Can you see the wheels sliding around lateraly in the truck? If yes, then as was said abvove, you've got too much slack in the wheels and their hitting something, like the reefer body or a coupler box or someting on the undercarraige.

Hey! This just happened to me last night with a Walthers DME brown hopper. I was swiching in my yard and when I started to shove back I noticed that the locomotive I was using started to loose a bit or traction. I Helped it along a bit and hooked up to a string of cars and it pulled them out just fine. But then it started to slip once I made it shove again. I looked at each car untill I found the problem car. I dont plan on taking the car apart because I dont want to crush any detail on it so i will just run it a lot and hope it breaks loose. lol it looks like we are on the same boat lol. Or same train haha
