Does anybody know where I can get some Sierra Railroad Decals from? I have just fitted DCC into a pair of Roundhouse 2-8-0 and I want to change them to Sierra Railroad No. 24 & 28.

    Thanks

Cloverhouse has two HO Sierra dry transfer sets, one for steam and one for passenger cars. I called him and asked him to make them for me in N. It took two years, but I got them. Had to order a complete run of each, 15 sets. He might make them again, but I can part with a few. Drifter had some diesel decals made up at one time, so he and I swapped a couple sets. Like you, I'm going to do a couple of 2-8-0, but I really want to find time to do #38. I have the 0-6-6-0 that Mokei Imports used to offer. The pilot and trailing trucks will be the challenge.
Did you get one of the WOT Sierra #11 cars? I've got an extra.

If you make the vector file, I'll print a couple sets for you.

I will make up the vector file this weekend.

I started doing some of it a while back, and now I have a reason to finish it.

I'll see if I can get a set that will cover Sierra 2-8-0s, and several eras.

I want to make the sets also include all the pin striping, number plates, and builder plates. If it will work, I would also like to do the orange trim, but will alps orange show up well on black?

    Below are 1940s-50s #24 & #18, 1970s #28 and Modern Sierra Railway #28.

How many sets would you be willing to print?

I have seen some discussion about orange being a problem, but this may just be "nay-sayers". We can give it a try though. :) The white is a snap. Just make what you want and I'll knock it out. BTW....the vectors look best if you do them in Corel. I can support that. No biggie. I'll print you as many sets as you want.

I should have said that the "nay-sayers" note the lack of a white base is the problem. If you know how to do Corel layering then this should fix the problem. A layer of white with the orange superimposed with exactly the same design would work. Be advised....these must all be done on a single pass! Color registering is POOR with the Alps. Layering is the only solution that I know of to get a multi-color pass w/o having the color registration issue. If the white is missing under the orange then apparently the orange appears dull and lacks crispness.

    You guys are awesome!

Curn, the loco shots look great. Are you using the roundhouse locos as well? I have a few locos on my roster that I want to change over to the Sierra Railroad, hopefully the majority will be basically the same or similar decals so if you are going to produce the vector file could you do the others as well? (Pushing my luck here).

Delljohnb, thanks for the offer to print a set for me/us, that would be fantastic. This would be my first time doing this so I am great full for the help. If it is ok and Curn is happy to do the relevant vector files here is my loco roster at present (Plus a couple that I am going to get) that I would like decals for.

    Bachmann 4-4-0 #1
    Atlas 0-4-0 #2 (Should be 0-6-0 but hay it’s a great runner)
Roundhouse 2-8-0 #18 (Still to Get)
    Roundhouse 2-8-0 #24
Roundhouse 2-6-0 #26 (Still to Get)
    Roundhouse 2-8-0 #28
    Atlas Shay #10
Atlas Shay #11 (Still to Get)
Atlas 4-6-2 #34 (Should be 2-6-2 but hay it’s also a great runner)
Kit Bashed 2-6-6-2 #38 (Probably based on a similar Idea to MioneRR)

Plus E-R Sharknose RF-16 A-B-B-A consist #51A & #51B - #52A & #52B (I know these are completely wrong but in my universe a large ore mine was opened near Yosemite in 1952 and a set of these was purchased from the B&O to handle the long drags down from the high sierra, plus this allows me to run them on the GSMRM layout over Donner Summit, I intend to keep the B&O color scheme, I just want to replace the road name).

So I gues I am after 10 Steam sets and 4 Diesel Sets. I would of course be more than happy with a set just for 24 & 28.

MioneRR, I didn’t even know about the WOT coach, looks beautiful on the website are you looking to sell your spare?

I finally got my camera back last night so I will take some pics and post them as I detail the locos up.

    Regards,

    James

since the number if decals for one set is actually small, I can do a "multiple-up" printing. That means that multiple sets per page. Whoever is working on the vectors, try to do the design so that we can make multiple sets per page.

For the B&O Wagon Top Caboose sheet that Skipgear and I did, we were able to get 4 sets per page. Pages are traditional 8-1/2 x 11.

here is a link to the thread.

Cracking work on the caboose. The decals lock great.

I can only speak for my self but I am really only after the road name and cab numbers, of course any other details would be great. So as it is going to be a multi sheet I suppose the best thing to do would be to have the specifically sized names and numbers on the sheet plus have the missing numbers plus a pair of road names for each Number in the generic style, because I recon at some point we are all going to get more locos, right? I know I will because my home layout, when I eventually build it, will be the Sierra Railroad with twist. Oakdale to Mono lake, then north to Carson City. Making it a competitor with Donner and Feather River. (I’m still working on the justification).

I don’t know what will actually fit on sheet but it looks, from the caboose sheet, like a lot, what do you think?

if it's just white names and numbers, we should be able to fit ALOT on a single sheet.

John, what version of Coral Draw are you running. I'll make sure to save in that file formate so that you'll be able to open it. I will also make the orange trim with white backing to see how it works. I will do this off to the side so If it doesnt work, it can be easily dropped from the art work.

    James,
I'm sure I can fit in all the numeric data to cover Sierra steam locos that you mentioned. I will need you to provide data on length for each loco mentioned so that I don't produce anything that will not fit on the model. I will provide you with the dimensions I need when I get home.

As for the Diesels, I have a coral file for Sierra #46. Highball graphics makes decals for the S-12s

    Sierra #46

    Sierra #40

For the shark nose units I can make a patch that will cover the "Baltimore and Ohio" that will be black, with metallic gold or white printed over black. You will also need to provide me dimensional data for this decal. I suppose this can be printed on the margins of your steam decals, or separate, but it wont be very big.

Once upon a time, when you were just a wee bit of a thing, there was a layout plan in Model Railroader that was two decks. Lower deck was Sierra and the upper was the V&T I believe. They were connected with a helix. I'll see if I can find it.

    Curn -
Are you planning on making the #46 decals also? If so I'm interested.

    Corel Draw Essentials 2

If you use unique fonts, make sure to include them. I have the B&O one (from the B&O Historical Society), but no other train related ones.

Decals for #46 are ready to print. All the text is converted to curves so fonts shouldn't be an issue.

John, PM me your email so I can email you the file as an attachment.

    Curn,
Do you know how to do multiple layers in Corel? That will make it easiest to do. Make white a background layer, then orange it's own layer on top of that. That way it is easier to control the layer print order. If it is just a white block behind an orange block on the same layer, ir makes it much harder to edit the sheet if the white backing doesn't work.

If you want, send the artwork to me and I will prep it for John. He is newer to Corel, I turned him on to it. I have been using Corel for about 10 years now. I am working on an Indiana and Ohio decal set that has the same problems with the orange so between the two sets we will find a resolution.

Wow....that model looks GREAT! I can tell you spent allot of effort. Grabs, beacon, etc. Impressive.

BTW, Skipgears really good with the Corel files. Excellent attention to detail and a great sense of what items are needed for a good selection of decals.
