It looks like they've pieced the smokebox front together and welded it. Not the prettiest repair but functional. Hopefully they'll get a new casting made as time permits.

I had a momentary slip at a train show and got me a Broadway Limited Dreyfuss Hudson. She's gorgeous, but man I really paid for that one. The brass hybrid feels nice and sturdy and runs really well. Only problem was that I had to slightly bend one of the pipes that comes down by the back drive wheel (you cans see the offending pipe in the picture) as the connecting rod would occasionally catch it. Little pressure with some needle nose pliers to get it out of the way and she runs beautifully. Still only DC, so I cannot enjoy the full range of sounds that DCC offers, but I'm hoping to get one of the DC sound boards BLI offers

Although I am getting out of the hobby, I still like trains. My recent purchase at the Salvation Army Store is this train set for .59 cents. IMG_8495.JPG

This is my recent acquisition from a forum member on Swapmeet for (mostly) the cost of shipping. Like much of my stuff, it's been in storage for a decade or three, so it all needs some TLC, but it's a whole lot of awesome.

In the upper right is the train inspector, Kitkit, making sure that OSHA safety rules are being followed. [IMG]

    Hi folks,
i just got a bargain set of three kits of steel mill gondolas
    70 ton gondola.jpeg
This is a version for the EU market, with the european NEM coupler pockets. That will save me the hassle of replacing the KD style and ensure compatibility with my fleet.
I plan to repaint all of these for my italian freelance RR and use for transport of scrap metal or wood.
Being not really familiar with those cars i have some questions:
1 do the trucks have roller or plain bearings? for what i see it is plain bearings.
2 Can they sustain a speed of 60MPH or should i limit it to what?
3 Does anyone have or can point me to the specs of these cars?

    Have a nice weekend

Nice that you and them worked it out in the end. What is that plastic hex/round looking container?

I followed that post. I am glad you got the items, and that all worked out. I have a side frame among other parts for that Athearn SW, or other Athearn units if you need them.
Got a couple cats that keep a sharp eye on my trains too. :)

Your cars have solid bearing trucks right now. Since you will be using these on a freelance railroad, you could always swap the trucks for a modern roller bearing or even a European truck design. In real life, these cars probably would not have been upgraded like that, but you may want to make a few changes to the cars to make them look more European.

You probably wouldn't restrict the speed of a car. I don't know of any US freight car that has a speed restriction by design. Trackwork and other rail traffic are more likely to restrict train speeds. Plenty of railroads had fast-freight trains, and 60MPH isn't unreasonable.

These are cars from the postwar era. From what I know about this model, it represents a 1950's car. I don't know which specific car this is a model of though. You could probably see these up until the 80's. In later years, the solid bearing axles would have been swapped for roller bearings, but the sideframes would have been kept with the journal box cover removed.

    Thank You Mr Trainiac,
here in Europe all cars whether passenger or freight have a conspicious speed limit marking, and the max authorized speed is also included in the UIC unified makings, both letteral and numeric.
I am actually surprised that there is no such item on display on US cars.
The car is a "Greenville" gondola and the marks report it was built in 1949.
The story is that the freelance needed quickly some cheap rolling stock in the 70s when the italian railways (and likewise other european railways) could not spare anything with a decent residual lifespan as they were still having pre war stock as the bulk of their fleet. So they looked to the USA where they could get 20 years old locomotives and freight cars on the cheap.
I am still thinking whether replacing the trucks or not, depending on the era I would like to use them.
I was planning more on the late 80s, early 90s rather than the 70s so that I could use the latest livery and UIC markings, and show them as refurbished cars; unfortunately the UIC standard freight Y25 bogies have larger wheels so in case I will have to use US style trucks I found cheaply in China but then the story will be they got new tracks before being shipped to europe.
Would not like solid bearing as these were almost gone in the 80s and in any case speed restricted to max 90kph.

Pere Marquette had a series of these cars that were delivered during world war II. They could wind up behind a Berkshire rolling out of Detroit to Chicago at 60MPH (officially), but actually sometimes running 70 or 80 MPH. They were repainted by C&O after the merger and lasted into the 60's.

The hexagonal thingy is a pill container with little parts for couplers, etc.

I would be interested in a side frame for that Athearn switcher. I looked online and at my local train shop and they have two kinds of Blomberg sideframes but not that one. I found one place online that has them (Arrow Hobby) but if you have one that you'd be willing to part with, feel free to PM me.

As an update, everything in the picture, except the locomotives and the kit, now have new metal wheels, kadee couplers, and ran for an hour or so on the layout at the Sebring Model Railroad Club. I have a Athearn blue box Conrail locomotive on my workbench that is mid-DCC-conversion at the moment, but the Amtrak F-unit probably isn't far behind. Then again, school starts again on January 9th and my free time will diminish significantly.

Little late to the party..... a gondola like that would not be equipped with constant contact side bearings, so depending on the railroad operating it the maximum speed could be limited to 50 mph.

At about the 2:30 mark in this video you can see what cars without CCSB do at high speeds, which is why they are often speed restricted:
