It may be that the outlets are mis-wired, or they may be wired correctly but the connection back at the breaker panel is incorrect (in which case all outlets on the circuit would show the same fault).

Have your electrician check both cases.

The following is my opinion. But many years of experience have proven invaluable.

I disagree with Doug on what to do first! Do not do any thing until you have replaced the power strip with an other of a different make. Then if the problem still manifest it self buy one of the adapters that you plug into the receptacle that has the three lights on it. (I highly recommend one of these any way) This will tell you if the electrical wiring is correct or not.
An electrician will do the same thing with one and charge you way, way more then the cost of the unit itself.
If the receptacle is wired correctly there is not problem at the breaker box. If the wiring is wrong then correct it. If correct the power strip is bad so replace it.

MarkInLA already tested the outlet in question with an outlet tester and posted that he was showing problems with three outlets in the room where the trains are located. So at this point he really should get someone who knows what they're doing to look at the circuit. Electricians may be expensive but they're cheaper then a funeral.
