And it starts!! Cheyenne is a very busy place; 60-80 heavy manifests and hot stacks, intermodals, and autorack trains thunder in and out of Cheyenne daily: We begin at the foot of the grade, in Cheyenne, WY. The grade begins in earnest just west of the historic UP depot: 4 tracks leave Cheyenne, looking east at all the signals guarding the block: The .82% grade west out of Cheyenne is readly apparent in this view:
Yo and the itinerant UP Centennial 6936 ran from Portola to Dunsmuir over the Feather River WP route today. Railroad days in Dunsmuir. Anyone get any photos? I'm about 500 miles away.
Thanks, Ben--you'll see it again, and with location info later in the tour... The grade on Sherman's east slop is clear in this view of a hot reefer train drifting into town: Much of the time, a train will stop to change crews at the depot, and then proceed a bit further west. Many times, they again stop short of this signal, awaiting a favorable signal indication: More to come....
This is getting interesting Hemi. Now that your started, maybe you could throttle up and continue west! Like all the pics so far.
Patience, my friend.... Little by little, I am hitting the best spots.. The areas in and around Cheyenne, I have documented, but the coverage from a few miles out of town to about half way up the Hill, I have NO coverage. So, I make up for it in town. On a side note, I have heavy coverage from Number 3 track, as numbers 1 and 2 are less scenic. I'll explain as we travel west! 'Throttle up', you say?
Are you kiddin'? This is the Union Pacific we're talking about.. That's the MAIN! It is a long telephoto shot, so that could be a partial explanation...
If anyone has Sherman Hill shots they want to share, please feel free! I know Friscobob and Alaska GP49 do.....
Those signals nearly all train stop at are shown in this shot looking west at the C&S overpass: The opposite side of the overpass: And a wider shot, near the 4-track crossing:
Continued.. One last shot before moving west: Thanksgiving night: At last, moving westerly again! Just west of MP511 is a grade crossing, and a 4-track signal bridge. This area's great to watch trains!
Otto Rd begins as West Lincolnway (US-30, which the UP main and yard parallels for many miles into Nebraska) ends, right at the I-80 overpass: From the other side of the tracks, where the 4 tracks begin to split:
Our next stop is off Military Rd, which leads to a military installation (gee, whodathunkit?). Number 1 and 2 tracks follow Otto Rd untill Otto Rd terminates into I-80, while Numbers 3 and 4 head south. Between Military Rd, and our last shots, the ROW's split 2 by 2, and #3 and 4 head a southward direction, towards Coastal Chemical. On #1 and 2, are these shots: Looking east: And west of the refinery, potash empties (175 of them) leave town behind 6 big AC units::
On #3 and 4 tracks, (number 3 heads to Laramie, number 4 heads to Denver) we look east to catch a whole autorack train thundering up #3 track: A great place to catch steam specials, too.... #4 track headed to Denver: #3 headed to Laramie, and ultimately Portland, OR: And a little further upgrade from the last shot, another 3985-led special heads up #3 track with Coastal Chemical disappearing in the smokeshow:
