'Asparagus Blight' Misfits' performance benefits C & C Station restoration

    Posted: 8/29/2007

The Misfits Theatre Group of Dayton is at it again, presenting a hilarious melodrama at Chuck's Old West Grill in the 1860's Odeon Hall, 65 Pike St., Old Town Dayton.

The show runs four, mid-September weekend nights, but mark your calendar for the performance scheduled Sept. 22, 7:30 p.m. when proceeds go to the Historical Society of Dayton Valley for restoration of the 1881 Carson & Colorado Railroad Depot.
If you haven't seen a Misfits' performance, don't miss the chance, particularly if you like to hang loose.

Misfit's promoter Carol Bauer offers a sneak preview of "Asparagus Blight and the Single Girl" or "I'll Blow You All to Bits," the plot set in Dayton at the turn of the century.

When the lights dim, the audience learns there's an asparagus blight or something mysterious stunting a family's crop. Heroine Mildred's father traveled to the big city of Reno to raise capital for the asparagus ranch in Stagecoach, but has never returned. A single girl, Mildred and her aunt go to Dayton to raise funds to run the farm until he returns. Her Aunt Fancy Ann runs the Muggins Bank and Trust.

But Mildred's father has fallen prey to Natasha Blowemup who has learned the farm won't produce because a pocket of silver ore is working its way to the surface. Natasha and sidekick, Regenald, want control of the property, planning to make a fortune when the mine is developed.

Mildred signs the property over to Fancy Ann for a six-month mortgage extension and a little extra money. Learning her father is dead, she signs a power of attorney to Regenald. (Hissing, booing okay).

"But as fortune has it, she meets Xavier T. Gundersnort and falls in love," says Bauer. "Xavier becomes her champion, and, well, you will have to catch the show to see how masterfully he solves his heroine's problems." (Cheers, applause urged).

Written by Tony Thornburg and directed by Gail Gundersen, the cast includes Karen Brinkoetter, Erin Copp, Joe Devlin, Jan Duke, Mark McGyver, Jan Parsons, Harriet Pfenzinger, Dan Rice, Melanie Snider, Steve Whiteside, Andra Woolman and Kiersten Kinkle, card girl.

Shows play September 21, 22, 28 and 29. Tickets sell for $10. Reservations advised call 246-9622.
