I have a few pictures of SD40-2's in hump yard service in Hamlet. They are numbered in the 24xx series. What makes these different from the 8xxx class units? Externally, I cannot tell the difference, they appear to be actual SD40-2's (not rebuilt SD40's)

So what about the 46xx class? Weren't these unrebuilt SD40's that were designated for yard service?

And yet another.... the quality is not the greatest, but the North end of the hump yard is quite a distance from the highway!

Just a thought - when a locomotive is designated for hump service, are the gear ratios changed for slower running?

Harold, are they all paired with slugs?

    Alan,
All of the units pictured are paired with "slugs", although I think CSX prefers to call them "yard mates". (Where is Harron when you need him; I'm sure he would know!) It may be just in the electrical and connections, as is the case with the CSX GP40-2's that are dedicated road slug "parents"
