After replieng to the SD35 critique topic I was thinking to my self that the SD35 is really great, again. But this time I thought of all the small stuff that Kato, Atals, and Life Like should set as a new standard. The number boards were done, and done well, there was a bell, a well molded horn and ever more great stuff. And not only that look at the options, compared to most manufatactures. Atlas should have sent out a menu to hobby stores to select. I know its not all aplicalble to other models (high, low hood), but most is. Atlas SD35 menu Low Nose w/o decoder Low Nose w Digitrax Decoder Low Nose with Lenz decoder Low Nose No Number Painted Low Nose number 1 painted Low Nose number 2 painted and then the same for high nose. Also-in terms of getting the loco, Atlas made another good move. Kato tends to send stuff out all in one blast, but some of u probably didn't notice, but atlas did hold some SD35s back so that late consumers and other numbers would be available later. Today, when I placed an order for an unnumbered SD35, the store, and distributer where out, but Atals still had some. So, soon I will have a third SD35. The small things that atlas put into this model should be considered standard with all manufacters. Happy Railroading!! Dane N. ------------------ BC Rail King TAMR2860@Canada.com for TAMR info. While I feel that the numberbaords Atlas, Kato, and LL do are great i have one critizen about the Atlas ones... On the cab of EMD engines Atlas has made, SD35, SD50, SD60 I think the numberboards a ressed in way to far, they are not even close to being flush with the cab. Oh well, just my opion, anyone else notice this. Kevin [This message has been edited by Kevin D Mumaw (edited 06 July 2000).]
Yes, I have noticed the same, Kevin. But I do prefer that fault over the undersized numberboards that have plagued Kato in the past. As for the SD35 availability, I was under the impression that the shipping was staggered from China due to the production. As soon as they had the numbers they were shipped rather than waiting until all the run was completed. Still to see them Downumnder. Gary. ------------------ Gary A. Is there any chance I might see this in HO. I really dont want a IHC POS. I had a IHC SD40 once. ran okay pulled like S*** looked like S***. I imagine the SD35 is worse. ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! LONG LIVE BIG BLUE!!!
Actually Chessie it ain't half bad. They've corrected the fuel tank and it runs fairly well.Cab needs replacing though. Hey I'm still havin' FUN! ------------------ Catt!
Thanks Dane. I'm not in the market just yet but I want a N&W and a Southern high-hood units eventually for a couple of EMD leasers. I'd just like to get a close look at one to see their potential as kitbashers. Gary.
Seeing how all the new stuff from Atlas is, (SD35's & the 23,500K tankers) and how easy and inexpensive it is to get there stuff, I fell that they are the best all around company in N scale now. I still think Kato locomotives run better, but man, Atlas sure has a good thing going now!!! ------------------ Craig Martyn BLMA(best looking models around) Custom painting and detailing AND N scale detail parts!!!
Note to Chessie SD50, I have noticed myself in the last while, Atlas has almost turned into 3 different worlds. Their large scale stuff, their N stuff, and their HO stuff. So I would not be suprised to not see the 35 in HO sclae, but I also will not be suprised if the GP38/40 doesn't make it to N scale. That is another advantage to Kato, if u see something good in HO, it will soon be out in N, and not only that new and improved (i.e. Kato SD40-2 Snoot nose, lettering on CP Rail). Oh well... they are still are great manufaturer of RR products in all scales. Dane N. ------------------ BC Rail King TAMR2860@Canada.com for TAMR info. BCRailKing@Canada.com
Wish I could say the same for the SD9043MAC from kato. ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! LONG LIVE BIG BLUE!!!
Dane, Atlas has done the GP40/40-2 in N-Scale. Great Loco by them. The GP38/38-2 uses the same frame so I hope we see them soon from Atlas. ------------------ RAILROADING-TO-THE-MAX, Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Style! One of the reasons the "Atlas" SD-35 is so well done is it is part Kato. The trucks are a dead ringer (to include the same number on the bottom as the Kato sd-40)and I even switched the truck sideframes and they fit perfectly!!!!The trucks are also the same on the Atlas/Kato sd7/9 as the sd-35.I haven't checked the rest of the loco but if Kato didn't help then Atlas is using the same manufacture as Kato. Check this out!!!(That is if you have one yet!!!!!) ------------------ THE B&O ROCKS!!!! ROYAL BLUE

The GPs are not 'directly' connected with N as the SD40s were in HO/N. They were doing a run of both at the same time, but the Geeps happened at different times. Note-also, if they do the SD35 in HO, it will have to be awhile, isn't atlas busy? Happy Railroading!! Dane n. ------------------ BC Rail King TAMR2860@Canada.com for TAMR info. BCRailKing@Canada.com

Dane n.

Atlas announced (informally) on their forum that they intend to do a "Classic" series of the GP40's... no word (yet) on the GP40-2, although they were introduced as DCC ready or DCC equipped models. As far as I know, Atlas has not had any affiliation with Kato recently on N scale projects. Chessie

That particular loco was a collaboration between Atlas and Kato, and I believe the molds were paid for and owned by Atlas. When their partnership finished (due to the increasing numbers, and price, Kato wanted per run) Atlas would have received the molds from Kato. It had to be a certainty that those same trucks would turn up again. Expect the same on the classic release of the SD7/9 (and the oft mooted SD24 ). As for being the same part number as the SD40, that is new to me. I do have both and will check that out. Very interesting!! Gary ------------------ Gary A.
