Steam was still in force on the Santa Fe after 1953. The last day of steam operations was on August 27, 1957 (My birthday, I turned 5 years old that day). Engine number 5021, a Texas class 2-10-4 was called out of Belen, NM at 8:20 AM to help a diesel powered freight up through Abo Canyon to Mountainair, returning to the Belen round house light and tying up at 12:20 PM. At 9:15 the same day engine number 3780, a 4-8-4 Northern performed the same task dropping its fire that afternoon for the last time.

I am pretty sure that ATSF 5021 is at the California State RR Museum now, donated there by ATSF. Subject of a lot of controversy about it being left outside and vandalized, along with mate 4-8-4 2925? I think.
