The first one was from an eastern RR. This one is from a western RR. Oh, and it's teeny too. I'm fiddling around with using them as signature parts.
In order to safely tow this 2-6-0 Mogul from Cape Cod to Danbury, CT, the main grive rods had to be removed. This is a shot of the middle driver and the bearing to which the rod would be attached. For protection, wood blocks are strapped around the bearing.
Peirce, that's an interesting approach to protecting the bearing--looks like it worked, though. Bill, that's the running gear from the only New York Central Niagara that was equipped with poppet valves, No. 5500. I think Franklin built the system.
