I am considering putting a river onto my Railroad and I would like to know a way to create a river affect. The way that I thought of was to put down some stones and then varnish where I want my river to be.
There is a product called E-Z Water, or something similar that we used once on a club layout. It is sort of granules which are heated with hot air gun until it melts, then sets level. There are lots of ways of making 'water', depending on whether you want running or still water, etc. There are a lot more better qualified folks on here that will help you I am sure ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
I prefer to use gloss medium for the water on my layouts. It can be tinted or used as is over a painted base.It doesn't stink while drying either. The only drawback I can think of is that it is rather pricey. ------------------ Catt!
The best representations I have seen of rivers and lakes have been done with a two part product called Environtex. You mix it in two equal parts and pour where you want it. Be sure to add whatever detail you want to the bottom cause it will cure to a clear hard surface. Be sure there are no holes cause this stuff will leak through the smallest pinhole. Pour no more than 1/8 inch thickness or so.
I use envirotex resin, but whatever you choose, avoid the E-Z water pellets, there has been several articles about it "pulling away from the shore" after several months. From what I seen, it looks like it shrinks and curls at the banks of the rivers. The solution is to re-heat the stuff with a heat gun...something that can ruin all your scenery!
I used Envirotex too for my lake, there is a way to make it have waves like a river, I think you run a stick through it or something after it sets a bit. I've seen the artists gloss medium before in pictures... what you could do is, glue down some tiny pebbles for your river bottom, spread the medium over and then place a few larger rocks sticking dry, out of the water... ------------------ espee2 Home: www.tunnel13.com layout: SP's Newberg Branch in N scale
Trouble is, a lot of the things you guys talk about, we cannot get in England What is gloss medium, or matte medium, for that matter I have always wondered, is it a kind of varnish? ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
Matte medium is a waterbase sealer, glue, and finish that you can usually get at craft stores where they sell d'copodge(sp) supplies. There are a number of different brand names. I bought some sold under the name, "Mod Podge, Matte-mat." The directions are in French and English, so it must be sold somewhere besides the USA. ------------------ Rett
Thanks, Rett. I will have to ask around ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
