So I live about 4 miles from a plant that has a rail line that ends just past it under the interstate. I've seen a few short CSX trains head down the line to the plant, and a few more recently because of a new brick company that has opened up. I was just wondering if there was any way I could see about riding one of the CSX trains from the plant up the sub and getting off before it hits the mainline (the mall is right next to the sub merging with the mainline) and if so, what would I have to do? Sorry if this is a kind of demanding first post, but I'm getting interested into trains again.
Up near Ashland. Dunno the name of the branch (If you head east from the Russell Yard and past AK Steel, its a branch to the right heading to southwest. Rarely used, but figure it would be a fun and easy way to get to the mall and learn a bit about trains.
Suspect this is the old C&O line to Lexington. It split off near downtown and headed southwest. The last time I was up that way you could still see the track from I-64.
Yeah. Under the railroad though, the rails are covered in grass and I guess noone uses it beyond that, plus the CSX line probably heads along the river and branches south.
In today's environment of fear and ignorance, I doubt if CSX would welcome any riders on their trains. The only two ways that I would approach this is to 1) write to CSX and just come right out and ask if it's possible, or 2) try to meet some of the crew of this train, and strike up a conversation with them. I suspect that they are told NO WAY to take anyone along, though. Good luck in your efforts and let us know how it works out. :tb-sad:
