What does everyone think about the new retirement system that is being talked about? I think its great...60 is much better than 67.
65 here in England But being self-employed, I don't suppose I will ever retire ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
Official early retirement age is 58 here. It used to be 65 and you're out, but legislation was passed several years back allowing anyone to continue on until it was deemed unsafe, or the person decided enough was enough. Gary.
Retirement is good for some but not for others. I always wanted to retire at 55 regardless of legislation or other company rules. Well I finally did it at 56. I did work at Canadian Tire for a year after that just for something to do. I left that and started doing volunteer things like delivering meals on wheels. We have a small trailer and go places where we can hike. Our favourite spots are Jasper and Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains. There is a hiking trail close to where we live called the Bruce Trail. It is 700 some km long and goes from Niagara Falls to Tobermorry. We often walk on sections of this trail and it's side trails. Now some of my friends are workoholicks and dread the thought of retiring. It is just as well that they don't because in a number of cases, forced retirement has caused unhappiness and early deaths. To each his own. It is great to have an interest in railroading and to build a model railroad. Along with the computer, I never get bored. ------------------ Robin Maberly and Tayside [This message has been edited by Robin Matthysen (edited 28 July 2000).]
Hey anything that gets us out of here earlier is great with me. Heck the 55-30 would be better yet but they better pay the dreaded medical Ins. We have several guys who can't wait for the 60-30 deal to pass so they can retire asap. The next day after it passes they better put on more help at the employment lines because some places are going to be short of bodies.
65 here in Sweden. I´m lucky to get a retirement agreement this year at the age of nearly 62. Now I have more time to spend on railroading, trainboard, and a lot of other interest that I never manage to do before. That´s includes Eva-Lena ! As Robin said - I never get bored. ----------- Helge SR&WF http://members.tripod.com/hkri1938
I favor the 60-30 plan 100%. As an active railroader I can see that some of my older colleagues are not physically able to perform at the same level as the younger ones, a simple fact of age. The long hours and other demands of safety sensitive jobs have to be considered. I'm not saying that everyone must go at 60, but some should. Each individual ages differently so if the option is available then it will benefit those that need to retire. I don't believe that this is going to be a mandatory retirement age, just an option. Many professions, police, firefighters, military, have retirement option with 20 or so years of service. Railroading needs the option as well!
Retirement can be lonely, being a peoples person I need to be amonst interesting people so at 70 I still work. As I dont have a dog I find myself talking to myself whilst working in my workshop. No club in the small town I live in.Have tried retirement about 5 times It sucks
Hey JimmyB check out some of outher forums, there's lots of interesting stuff with an international flavor. ------------------ When in doubt, empty your magazine.
I hope to retire in my mid 50's all depends on how much my superannuation grows. Working on the government railway we have an attractive package so if all goes well i'll be a fulltime n scaler at 55 rather than a fulltime prototype worker lol ------------------ http://users.bigpond.net.au/railroad2000
You have it well planned, Paul ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
Great to see you on Trainboard JimmyB. Welcome and it has been a real pleasure to meet you in person. Come to visit Canada more often. Lots to interest you here. ------------------ Robin Maberly and Tayside
Welcome Jimmy!! I'll hit the big 70 the 30th of this month! Retirement is great! I'm working full time on my last layout, running trains on the old one I'll sell later, and swapping lies with the kids who can't drive a Model-T and probably wouldn't know how to fill the steam chest to even start a steam engine! My wife and trains keep me from staring at the boob tube. Ha. ------------------ Watash
With the BLE signing off on the 60-30, and with congress looking to pass it soon. expect to see help wanted sign's at Amtrak. We have 2 engineers here just waiting till the day after it is signed so they can march into the RRB and say sign me up. This is going to be a wind fall for the RR's they will be getting rid of a lot of seniority that gets whats left of the good bennies.
